Gas lines & Corrosion

All,

I've been wanted to start this thread and have not seen this topic. My trailer is two years old and during my spring driveway inspection I noted frame and jack rust which I usually hit with rust converting primer. My question is when do I have to worry about the the corrosion on the cast iron gas lines. I was thinking of coating the lines with rust converter also.

I don't think rust converter could hurt. I think you should do it.

I wire brush any corrosion and paint with a rust inhibiting paint or primer

The rust converter would be your best bet. It does a great job on my line going to my pool heater.

Not sure about most Mfg's, but my gas lines are black pipe which eventually rust with exposure. Not sure I've seen cast iron in any applications.
Either way, I think it would take decades to compromise the black pipe or any iron type pipe for that matter, however, a simple process to protect surely can't hurt.
I've only seen Scothguard green gas pipe for underground residential, never for RV's, due to its higher costs.

I just bought a small lance truck camper,a 1997 , and the black pipe is rusted ,but not bad and probably never painted , but it is not exposed to the weather.

My gas line runs underneath the camper but on top of the under covering. I coated my gas line with a product called Fluid Film. Check it out on the web. Repels water and is a rust inhibitor. Also sprayed the screw jacks. All kinds of info out there on what it is used for. Hope this helps.
