General RV Question

Would like to know about generators, figure I will need one eventually if not sooner. My 5er does not have on on board. What do you have, and/or recommend, quiet enough to use in campgrounds or in wal-mart parkinglot? Thanks for any input.

I don't have one but there are a lot of Hondas in the community. There was a discussion a few months back so do a search.

I have used a Honda 1000 for the past 10 yrs to keep the battery charged when dry camping for several weeks. I use a seperate battery charger rather than the converter for quicker charging. It will also power the TV, frig. and cell phone chargers if the battery is not too depleted. Don't use it at all when overnighting at Walmart.

Size depends on what you want it to power. If all you need it for is battery charging and powering a few items then a 1000w Honda or Yamaha will do fine. If you want to run coffee pots and microwave then you'll be a 2000w. If you are looking to run the A/C then you'll need a 3000w. I would recommend the Honda or Yamaha inverter generators because they are quiet and easy on fuel.

I agree with determining what you need to power. In my case, it was important to be able to cool off the 5ver until it cooled off outside while overnighting in Walmart or in National Forest campsites. I liked the Yamaha 2400is because of its size, fuel economy and its ability to run my 15000BTU AC(when nothing else is running) with the quick start capacitor installed.

If you need to power more (or less) then you have many choices to right size the generator (inverter) to those needs. As for Yamaha or Honda, I think they are of equal quality. I went with Yamaha because Honda did not have an option at the 2400 range just 1000, 2000 or 3000 (or buy two and hook together) which I did not make economical sense to me.

In 2006 I purchased two Honda 2000 generators. I also purchased the parallel kit at the same time. The parallel kit ties both together for 4000 watts.It also has a 30 amp breaker and a 30 amp receptacle. I really like the pair. When dry camping I can plug into the 30 amp receptacle on the parallel kit and start either generator when using lights ect; or start both generators at the same time for using the air condition. They are very quiet. I also use them for power tools when power is not close by. I also like the fact that I can load one at a time weighing in at 46.3 Lbs. I would recomend them.

+1 on the honda...I only have one 2000 series with the 30-amp plug and I am thinking about getting the second one for those camp walmart nights when I might need the air. As others have said, they are quiet, and lightweight. However, they have re-designed the 3000 series so they are not so bulky, but they are still heavy!! VM manufacturing makes a supplement fuel tank that can extend your re-fuelings by a LOOONG time.

Just a thought... Have you looked at a in bed generator? I have seen a set up with a Kubota generator that was tied to the trucks diesel tank. It had enough juice to power the whole trailer along with a/c using with a 50amp plug. The generator was only slightly higher than the bed rails, quiet and permanently mounted. Granted you'll loose some bed space
