With my 2007 F-250, I set my integrated controller at 6.0. Anymore then that and I'm locking up wheels pretty easily on my triple axle.

I doubt that anyone cares, but here's my update...adjusts brake pads and tested several times, with minor adjustments in between. All works well around 8-8.5 on integrated controller. Drums were slightly warm, and all appears same by the end. I even set controller to zero, and then went for test drive to confirm bearings were not heating up. I think all is good! Ready for extended trip in three weeks. Thanks to everyone!

Better that you carefully checked it out at home. Less stress on the road and you are better informed if something does happen. As Lloyd stated, have a great trip.

I'd still stop with an IR gun and check after 50 miles or so just for peace of mind. No fun finding out too late!

Thanks for the advice Bob. If I do get an IR gun, what are normal temperatures? Normal driving and heavy long braking. At what point do you get concernd?

Steve, here's some more for you to read, if you haven't found enough already.

There's not an "as usual" for all rvs, it's more of what "yours" are running, your looking for the odd temp from the others. Be sure to aim the IR gun at the same points of each wheel, the tires, drums, & spindles will all be different temps. It will take you several tests to determine what's usual for yours.

A friend just pulling in yesterday and I checked his drums. Three were in the 150 to 170 degree range, one was 115 degrees. Most likely, that electric brake is not working. If you were able to stop with zero use of the brakes, then drums temps should be maybe 20-30 degrees higher than tire temps. But with any brake use expect immediate temp reading to be 50-70 degrees above tire temp. Otherwise, as stated look for abnormally high or low readings.

I carry a IR temp gun in the door pocket of my tow vehicle. I walk around and temp test tires and hubs on trailer and tow vehicle during every fuel stop. Also gives me a chance to do a visual of all lites and doors. Also gives me a little comfort about what I can't see!
Just my opinion, but I do not want my trailer brakes doing the work to stop my rig. I do like to feel the trailer respond to braking but the brakes on my GMC 2500 are designed to handle gvw loads.

I do the same thing, but I stop and check more frequently than just fuel stops. I stop at most rest stops to let the dogs out and check the temperatures then.

I think we agree to a point but I always try to get a balance of braking from both the truck and the trailer. Too much of either is not an ideal safe braking process, especially in wet conditions.
I usually run about 140-165 degrees at the hubs. It can get up to 205 or so if checking just after a downhill and checking immediately after stopping.

Bob, thanks for giving those temps. I now have a reference point. I did get an IR gun.
