Lost AC Saturday during heat wave

We were enjoying the hot weather here in Ohio knowing we had a frosty camper to get into Saturday night. Much to our chagrin, the AC quite during the afternoon.

We were hovering around 90 so I decided to go into commando mode for a fix.

Here's what i know:
  • AC vent cover in the trailer was dripping wet from either a leak on the seal (Which i already had replaced last year) or from heavy condensation from lack of air movement on slightly closed vent.
  • no power to Dometic digital thermostat
  • all breakers and fuses are intact..no problems there
  • metal junction box/connections/circuit board were damp.

After pulling the cover off the electrical box on the ceiling I found..a circuit board installed directly under the AC intake...brilliant engineering.not

Put it back together to deal with when we got home...Than Sunday came and was even hotter. I figured I'd give it another shot and look deeper into the problem...

Further inspected the board connections and found the board in the picture below.

Yep, the 12v connection in the connector arc'd and burnt one of the connections in the female side of the thermostat connection.

So there I sat in my trailer ...hovering around 88 degrees by breakfast..and I remembered, i bought the 50 amp trailer ..capable of the second AC install.

I simply moved the male thermo connection to the OTHER thermo input, and we got AC! Turns out the pins on the connector had some carbon build up but the receiver connections were completely burnt away..like a fuse connection..

Ordered another board off ebay for 55 bucks...not worth submitting to extended warranty.

Before I install and run the risk of shorting out another board, anyone got advice? Do I need to just keep the main celing vent open all the time to prevent condensation during hotter weather or maybe have another leak? Can the drain pan get blocked?

Not sure, but at least you can get board cheap.

Can you adjust location of board at all? Maybe crack the ceiling vent a little to allow some ventilation?

I tend to leave on of our blow-thru vents partially open (we have 3 on the Coleman unit) anyway, so maybe doing this on yours will help.

Thats what's odd. the vent was partially open, but if i open it all the way, the vents in the bedroom and bunkhouse are not effective.

We were at Salt Fork State Park which is notoriously super-humid in the summer.

It might be inspection time to see if the weep holes are getting plugged. That will prevent the condensation moisture from running out on to the roof, and maybe allow it to run inside. Accounting for the wetness you seen.
Were you running the fan on high? A must.
Was all the windows and doors closed? A must.

Lloyd,

Will check weep holes,

Yes on the fan on high...always and the camper was shut up except for the kids running in and out..that may have contributed.

Still scratching my head why they'd put the circuit board directly under the intake..

So, if you were in a humid environment and you didn't see any evidence of water dripping off any corner of the roof, then you can be sure the drain holes are plugged.

I agree with Larry...When we run the AC the water runs off the roof like crazy...
