Well we have returned back to the barn in one piece and no worse for

wear! I am happy to say that all things worked as expected on our rig

but there was a bit of a learning curve. Thanks to all who replied to my

request for 1st trip equipment as with your help we were prepared and

just had to pick up a few final items.

Our dealer CanDan RV was great and our walk through with Nathan went

very well. They set up the hitch and with a little tweaking we got

everything on the level and with a quick gain adjustment to the trailer

brakes we were on our way! Trailer seemed a little heavy and once we got

to the campground we found out why, they had filled the freshwater tank

so there was 400 extra lbs of weight in the front of the trailer.

Trailer towed well although it was a bit of a white knuckler as I

haven't towed anything that large with our truck before.

As I said all worked as expected while camping although it took a bit of

searching to figure out we had to burn in our furnace to get that

wonderful smell out of it. Also found that the furnace seemed to cycle

alot. After covering part of the floor vent that was blowing right at

the thermostat the problem was solved and furnace heated up to proper

setting before shutting down. Thanks to the forum we figure out how to

get our movies back to color and not black and white. Still working on

getting an iPod to work with the USB hookup but we muddled through with

the AUX setting and still had camping tunes. Thanks to all for

suggestion to update the stinky slinky and the Rhino worked flawlessly

with no Robin Williams from RV imitations . All in all with a little help from you folks all went well.

Now on the trip home we drained the freshwater tank after arriving at

our campsite so there was no extra weight up front. Trailer felt much

better weight wise towing but seemed to have a little bounce on the back

of the truck. Driving on the highway was fine but started to notice a

little tail wagging as we got close to our exit. Seemed the wind had

picked up a bit and due to the height of our rig that was probably the

issue. Long story short I did not enjoy that feeling to much so my

question is should I be investing in a WD hitch with some sway control?

The hitch we received from the dealer was adequate and seems to work but

I would really like to have all sway eliminated. As I said it was very

slight but enough to make me pay attention. I also assumed that since we

had drained the freshwater tank there was not as much weight on the

tongue and I know from what I have read that that can cause sway issues.

Problem is we don't want to be traveling with water up front as that is

just added weight that we don't need with our truck. Another difference from the trip out was that I had one less link hanging on

the way home. On the way out I had 6 links and the way home I had 5.

Could that be the issue as we noticed a little more bounce in the truck

on the way home.

Now I know that I am right under the limit with the size of out trailer

and tow vehicle but updating to a bigger TV is not an option at this

point. I am willing how ever to spend a few more bucks to update our

hitch to eliminate any sway issue.

As always thanks for any and all responses,

PS can anyone give any more detailed instructions as to how to post a pic in signature? Kinda proud of our rig after all.

Roadie66,
What have you got for tires on your TV? Are they the stock tires the truck calls for, or have you upgraded to a tire with a heavier sidewall? Are you running enough air pressure in them?
Do you have any type of sway control on your trailer now?

No sway control just an adequate hitch from the dealer. I just upgrades to LT tires on my truck (BFG All Terrain TA KO) and am running 45 PSI.

At almost 30ft. that's a lot of trailer behind your 1500 Chev. I think you would like a good sway control setup.
What does the sidewall on your tire state for max pressure?

As far as posting pictures, I use http://photobucket.com/
You have to join (it's free) then you upload your pictures to them and from there you can post pics on the forum.

Old Farmer,
Tires are rated to 80 psi but with the aluminum rims I think max as per owners manual is 50 psi.
Right now I am looking at the new Anderson hitch as well as the tried and true Equal-I-Ser. I did look at the Hensley but that a lot of coin and a lot of weight!. What are you running on your rig?

More Tire pressure will probably help a lot. I towed a 30' TT with a 1500 suburban and it swayed ALOT until I got a swar bar (friction style) which helped considerably. I question your "50 pounds max due to alum rims" theory. Are you sure you weren't just reading the max tire pressure for the vehicle tires you used to have? My aluminum rims on the Cruiser are rated for 80lbs, same for my alum rims on my Chevy truck.

Stan,
Thanks for questioning that as now I am not sure? Thought it was in manual but now I look and can't find it!
Where did you find the ratings for the rims on your truck?

Ian

You might try looking on the back of the wheel for the rating (psi/mph). Or check with the wheel mfg.

Jim,
Ya just crawled under but couldn't find anything that resembled a rating. Guess I'll have to take one off and have a look.

For the Cruiser, I called and talked to the manufacturer because I upgraded from cheapo tires (max 65PSI) to Maxxis (80PSI). They said the rims will hold 80PSI easily with steel stems. The Chevy label lists tire pressure at 60 frt and 71 rear. The dealership also confirmed I could go up to 80PSI (tire rating) when towing but I leave it at 71.

Nice looking setup. Didn't take you long to figure that out. Good job.
Looks like the other guys have chimed in and have you going in the right direction.

I had a Reese WDH and a friction bar sway control. Not sure of the brand, that was in '92 when I bought it and that information was purged from my brain to make room for the new stuff. When you reach my age to have to be selective in what you learn/remember.

Thanks Stan for the info.

I guess sway control has evolved a bit in the last 20 years but the friction bar idea is still the same. I have the same issue with brain purging and boy has it been purging since we got the new rig. As with every issue there are 2 sides of the fence as to what sway control works best so I guess I am gonna have to pick a side and go with that. Gonna try a few setup suggestions on the next trip and if that doesn't remedy the issue then I'll be looking at a an anti sway solution. Looking at the new Anderson Anti sway hitch but we will see.

We had the WD hitch with friction sway control on our 25 ft. TT. When we went to a 29 ft. TT I had the dealer add the reese dual cam units to the Reese WD hitch and junked the friction bar. Night and day difference.

I pull a 30r with my 09 Ford F 150. On a long trip on bumpy highway the ride was uncomfortable and had bounce. So I added airbags and the ride is much smoother. I also have a sway bar system which works well.

Sure DjkeII01 that would be great.
What size and type of airbags did you use? Firestone, Airlift, 2000lb or 5000lb
