We are heading down to North Carolina with our travel trailer and every site that I search for directions gives me tunnels. I can omit tolls and ferries but can not omit tolls. Can anybody suggest a website that has driving directions specifically for travel trailers??? I also know that we do not want to take the Key Bridge, even though the other way is a little longer. Also tossed up between the BQE and GWB. I personally can't stand the BQE but that is me.. Anybody have any suggestions, tips, ideas??? Anything is welcome.

Thanks so much..

Is there a problem with tunnels? I used Map Quest and it shows the best route to be I-95. There is a tunnel in Baltimore but there is an easy way around it while staying on the interstate system. As far as I can tell, that's the only one which restricts you. The others allow RVs with propane tanks as long as they are not more than two in number and 20 lbs. capacity each.

Is there something else I'm missing?

We are not allowed through a tunnel with propane. Our trailer has 2 propane tanks.

RV,s go through tunnels all the time. I believe the regulations for propane apply to the commercial trucking industry for large amounts but I don't have the facts in front of me.

I would just drive on.

If you shut all the LP appliances off, can't you go through the tunnels then?? Unless they have changed things, I was under the impression it worked that way.

"We are not allowed through a tunnel with propane. Our trailer has 2 propane tanks."

The only tunnel which that applies to is the Ft. McHenry tunnel in Baltimore. You can take a by-pass around it.

The other tunnels allow propane tanks such as you have.

If I remember correctly I inquired about that the last time and I was told I am allowed with the tiny propane tanks (I think they are 10-12 oz. each). Not the tanks that the travel trailer has, which are BBQ size. I think I called the Port Authority, not really sure who it was but it was a while ago.. Does anybody know the exit for the by pass around the Fort McHenry Tunnel? I don't want to take the Key Bridge..

Take Exit 64 (I think) from I-95 to I-695. That will take you around the tunnels and put you back on I-95 if you just stay on it. There are shorter ways to go but you might need a map.

Google Map Quest and follow the directions for directions. You can zoom in on specific parts of the map and see details, such as exit numbers. The only tunnels which will concern you are the two in Baltimore and you can get around them on I-695.

You will not have a problem with any other tunnels. Just keep the gas turned off at the valves.

I just travelled back from Savannah last weekend and if you take the bypass 695 you are fine. That is what we did, just watch the signs they are a little confusing. Have a safe trip.

+1 on the Baltimore tunnels. That is a route we use to eastern PA.

As far as a site for routes, try the one below. It's designed for semi's.

I didn't see any mention of tunnels, though. There are a few others I use, but can't remember the names.

I took the route around the west side of Baltimore (695 to 95). This route has no bridges. I had no problems with traffic, if I remember correctly it was at about 9:30 on a Monday. I had the same concerns about propane. My nephew called a buddy who transports RV's and was told they have spot checks at the tunnels. I was told you park the rig until you take care of the propane tanks, don't know if it is true but I wasn't going to chance it. Have a good trip.
