No Hot Water

I have a dual hot water tank. Gas/electric. It has been on gas for the last 2 days and have very little to no hot water. All the valves are open, there is water in the hot water tank (at least i think so) and nothing. I get about 30 seconds of hot water then cold.

Any ideas.

Are you saying it doesn't work on gas or electric? On a dual element home W/H, I would say you lost one of the elements, but on a single element I have not heard of your symptoms. Do you have a mixing valve on your unit? Some of the new ones do and they have been problematic. How long does the burner run on gas before shutting down? It could be the main control board has gone south if the system shuts down early (the temp control is on the board and is not adjustable). I am sure others will chime in.

You mentioned that all the valves are open. Are you sure that the bypass valve is closed on WH and not open. If it's open, it's unlikely that you'll get much hot water. Look at the back of the WH tank and see if you the two or three valve system. If you have the two valve system like ours, you may want to check the valve positions. Here is a picture of the back of our WH tank with the valve positions for Winter and Summer.

I agree with the above about the valves I have done that and the same thing happened hot water for a second then cold .

Agreed.The lines on our 305 are red-blue a little easier to figure out,the one valve should be closed.

Looking at this post and seeing the Winter and Summer pictures lit a light, what a great idea! Take two pictures, label them and put them in the water heater compartment!! Duh; guess I'm the last one to think of this. I just label the pipes/hoses with black magic marker but I like the picture idea.

Another thing to look at, make sure you have your shower head valve open. If it is closed, & the hot/cold valves in the shower are still open, you will get the same effect as you described. If you have single faucet fixtures, you could also have bad "O" rings in the fixture.

I'm curious to know if it was a valve at the back of the tank and if you have the same valve arrangement that I illustrated in this thread.
