IMHO I d leave it closed til in use, the female fitting has a check valve built in but if it gets full dirt/bugs/whatever it could leak, & yes perpendicular is closed parallel is open.

Another question, if I may.... I bought my trailer as a 2015 but on the sticker located on the trailer it says manufactured July 2014. I assume this is right. By the time it hot up to Canada it would be classified as 2015. Is there a way to actually determine from serial number or something?

If it states on your paper work it's a 2015, then my guess is that is what it will titled as. Won't make any difference when is was built for all general purposes.

Our 2017 SunsetTrail has a build date of February 2016 on the VIN sticker on the side of the trailer. So I would say yours is a 2015 model year.

Our 2016 was built August of 2015. About two weeks prior to the company going back to a two year warranty. Ughhhhh

Model year changes in early spring so any unit built in July will be the next year.
