onan Generator 7000

Inquiring and wondering. I seem to only be able to start my generator if I have my coach engine running. if the coach is off then the generator seems to just click at the main start switch on the generator. but when I start up the coach engine then go out and hit the start switch on the generator it starts right up. then I shut down the coach engine and everything works as it should. any one have any input on how it's supposed to work. or what could be the issue there. Thanks for your time. Mike

Sounds like there could be a bad ground to the frame for the generator or on the house batteries. When you start the rv you are connecting the coach batteries & house batteries together in the circuit, the coach battery ground is good since it cranks up the RV, thus when it's connected to the Onan it cranks it as well. Check the grounds for the generator and the house battery's. Could be wrong but it's a start.

Papa: so your thinking it could be the ground to the frame. I will check them. just a thought do you think if my coach batteries are dead or not fully charged would or could that be the issue when trying to start the Gen from the switch without the rv engine running.

Do your lights, awning, etc work off the house batteries without being plugged into shore power? If so the the house batteries aren't dead. Also could be a bad wire or relay. I would start with checking the ground wires. Maybe someone else with jump in that had had a similar problem before.
