Protection Package

Hey All -

Just curious what everyone's experience is with adding the dealer "protection package". On our new RV, the dealer is offering both the internal fabric protection, as well as the exterior paint protection packages, all for the low
() cost of $1499. I did this on our first RV, but I'm not sure I ever saw any of the benefits.

Thoughts?

$1500 will pay for a lot of repairs, after the warranty has run out of course. The dealer I used pushed about the same package for about the same price. I said NO. It was for 5 years but the coverage started and overlapped the factory warranty. So really for 4 years.

Just to clarify, I'm speaking of the fabric and paint protection, not the extended warranty. I fully intend on buying the extended warranty, but just wondering about the paint and fabric protection.

You didn't state how long that protection plan was for. Myself I didn't, and wouldn't do it. Things are going to age, wear, fray and fade. Including the shine and thrill of a new RV. How big your family is and how much you use the camper, and how fussy you will be protecting it from the normal every day wear and tear should enter into your decision also. I don't want to dampen your enjoyment of getting and owning a new RV, just telling you how I perceive it.

Dirt
My first question to you is do you have young children, and will you let them eat, jump, and wrestle on the furniture ???

As far as the paint is concerned, as long as you wax it, ain't much more you can do to help that. IMHO

You could buy Scotch Guard at any store and do it yourself for a fraction of what the dealer wants. As far as the outside protection, I use Rejex, a polymer sealant the has uv protection and resists bugs from sticking to it. You can do that yourself also, and remember, you don't have to do the Rv in one day. Spread it out over a few days.

I bought the "extended" warranty for that price. Supposedly good for seven years. I think that would be excessive to pay that for both a "protection" and again for a "extended" warranty. Some will say the same for just the extended warranty.

Look closely at the extended warranty. I don't think it's worth it. Just my 2 cents.

The big question is what is normal wear and tear. I see a lot of stuff will be denied.

Sounds like the start of a popcorn thread to me.

Here's just one of the past discussions on EW's.

I have the extended warranty for seven yrs. It is supposed to cover appliances and all mechanicals bumper to bumper. I don't recall fading paint being on the list. Is it worth it. I don't know. I do know you could spend that on a frig or an AC alone. I will say that I NEVER have bought them on anything else. Why I bought one for the camper. I don't know. lol. Ask me in 7 years if it was worth it.

Protection plans always seemed like just a money maker for the dealer from what I could see. I am not a fan of extended warranties either. Like someone said earlier. You can repair a lot of things for $1500 once the warranty runs out. I won't totally knock an extended warranty though because if you have a fridge and ac go out during the extended warranty period you would be money ahead on buying the warranty. Personally, I think I would take the chance on that not happening.

Exterior Protection: Buy a tin of wax a case of beer order a pizza call some friends and you will be done in about an hour.

Interior Protection: Two or three cans of scotchgard should keep you covered.

Extended warranty: I didn't buy one, if you feel you need one then by not buying the above warranties you should put a big dent in the cost.

I see a major profit center for the dealer, extended warranty AND fabric protection. Bet they won't warranty the tires!!

DirtEngineer, You didn't say whether or not to have an enclosed storage. This will help protect the outside a lot longer.

They try to entice you into the warranty and protection packages by giving you a lower interest rate on the financing. The interest discount ends up balancing out the cost. I'm a 3 hour drive from the dealer so it makes warranty work challenging if a problem comes up though.

I would not go for it.
You have a new trailer, use it,enjoy it and take care of it as much as you can, repair it when needed and do not think "I payed for extra warranty and did not use" what a waist ....

I think the biggest question is, what is required in order to maintain your warranty?
If you have to wash/wax it 2x per season and a registered facility of some kind, then what's the point. The fact that you are waxing it will help protect the paint enough. And the rubber roof requires it's own treatment.
As for the interior, there isn't much that you can't replace yourself easily enough or have someone do.

At $1500, I don't know think I'd be buying in.
I did buy extended warranty though.

When you get that new unit, start by getting a 3m person to come and do a good 3 feet from the bottom up over that front cap. Will save you a LOT of paint chips

I had the front of mine done for $150
