Recommended tire pressure?

Hi all,

We have a 2011 Slingshot 29BH. I checked the tire pressure (tires cold) the next day after I brought it home from the dealer and the pressure in each tire was 42 PSI. I noticed that on the placard on the side of the trailer that the recommended pressure is 50psi. I looked on the tires and the max pressure allowed is 50psi.

I'm a little leary of pumping up the tires to their max pressure, and since the dealer maintained the pressure @ 42psi, I'm wondering what the proper pressure should be? What pressure do y'all maintain your RV tires to?

Many on here will tell you to run it at max cold pressure. I personally run mine at 47 psi as I too am afraid to run at max psi. I see lots of postings on another board telling everyone to run at max psi for safety due to tires having a lot of blowouts. I keep wondering if running at max psi all the time doesn't contribute to this? No explanation or fact behind it just my own opinion so take it for what it's worth.

Your tires at max pressure can carry 1760 lbs each or 7040 lbs total.

Your trailer has a GVWR of 7436 lbs. If 10% of the trailer weight is on

the tongue that puts 6336 lbs. on the axles. So max pressure will give

you about 175 lbs. safety margin per tire IF your trailer is loaded perfectly evenly.

Your tires inflated to 42PSI has a

carrying capacity around 1550 lbs each or 6200 lbs total which would have the

tires overloaded when the trailer is fully loaded.

While the below link is a load chart for Maxxis tires, all ST tires will be very close to these figures.

Some people prefer to be a little under the max psi for a smoother ride. I say if the tire says 50 psi-- put 50psi in it. The manufacturer has designed that tire to work at the psi. I've had a tire blow out on a previous trailer and I used to run them 5-10 psi below the max. Not anymore!!!

I normally run our 5vr's tire pressures at the max of 65 psi. That means that tire is capable of taking it's maximum load and if they aren't at their full load, then they'll run cooler with less chance of overheating and exploding. I intend to get a set lof 15" load range E tires for our rig and run them at the max.

Our tires are rated for max pressure of 80 psi. I checked them last Saturday for a trip we are taking later this week and set them all to 80 psi which is also what I have my TPMS set to.

Experts all say that most tire failures are from under inflation so I always run at the max pressure. Five years on the same set of cheap China tires that came with the RV and not a problem.

I set mine at the max tire pressure cold listed on the side of the tire. No problems at all. I do monitor the pressures driving but that number goes out the window as the tire heats up.

It was between 80-85F for me.

Run them at the max, in your case, 50 PSI. Many tire failures are caused by running tire pressure too low. Low tire pressure causes heat build up and can cause tire failure. Low pressure will also cause your tire to wear out faster on the outside edges.

Cold pressure would be the ambient temp with no heating from being driven or from the sun. In most cases it is done in the morning before the sun has had a chance to shine on them heating them up.
