slide won't go back in

We got the trailer back yesterday, parked it in the driveway and put the slides out. This is so we can prepare the unit for our trip to Florida.

Tonight the forecast is calling for snow and ice rain, so my husband figured he should put the slides back in for now. The temperature right now is a sunny -10 C (14 F). The bedroom slide will not go all the way in. It is a Schwintek slide. My husband tried putting it out and in several times, but it stops about a foot short of all the way in. We checked and there are no obstructions. We even tried with taking the mattress off the bed.

The motors simply quit. The trailer is plugged in.

Any ideas? Anyone else had this problem?

Yes, he tried this several times already. He called the service manager at the dealer and he said they are dealing with a similar problems on a Sunset Trail right now and trying to figure it out.

My husband got it in as far as about 3" from being in, and said he could smell something, like maybe the motor, burning a bit.

So my husband is going to take the trailer in to the dealership right now.

Hubby brought the trailer to the dealer and they fiddled with the timing on the motors and got it fixed up.

The service manager said Crossroads is having a lot of trouble with these Schwintek slides and are re-fitting some of them with only one motor. We are going to try to get in on that next year at the rally if we can.

Wow. I have seen alot of issues on here with the Schwinteks.

Kinda glad I have the old school slide mechanism (although I just set myself up...didn't I).

The biggest problem with the Schwintec system, is it is not forgiving to sloppy installs. with no real adjustment. the system needs to be installed plumb and square. if that is not accomplished the system hangs up or worse. If trailer manufactures took the time to install it right, I believe it would be one of the best and simplest systems on the market. JMHO.

If CR is re-fitting some units to a single motor system, most likely that means they are replacing the Schwintek system (that Lippert owns) with a cable type system made by BAL. As far as I know, the Schwintek design requires two motors. Also CR is now using the BAL cable system on all slide outs on 2015 units, well at least on Sunset Trail fifth wheels.

The whole idea of a two motor system where the motors have to be in sync just sounds wrong! You have to wonder about the thought process behind that. The other two slides in our unit are much larger and heavier than the bedroom slide, yet they only require one motor each.

Our problems are not over. As I said before, my husband took the trailer back to the dealer to get the slide back in. What they did was work together to put the slide back in by pushing and pulling.

It was working then. So tonight we tried to put it back out and it would not go out. The motors are out of sync once again, you can hear it. With plans to go to Florida for the winter on Saturday, this is not a good thing.

My husband emailed Terry tonight and will call him in the morning to see if there is any way we can make an emergency stop at the factory on the way south. It is out of the way, but this is very important. The reset is obviously not working.

If we cannot get into the factory on the way to Florida, we will check with a local dealer there to see if we can get it fixed there. The factory is obviously our first choice.

I will keep everyone posted.

A question: is there a way to manually put this slide in and out?

Thanks, Mark. This is what we have been doing, but the motors continue to go out of sync. If we cannot get it fixed at the factory on the way to Florida, then we will get it done on the way home in early April. In the meantime, I guess we will have to use the method the service manager used - two people push the slide (one on each side) while a third person holds the switch.

There does not appear to be a manual method which does not involve the motors.

My husband talked to Terry Baughman this morning and was able to get an emergency appointment at the factory for Tuesday morning. Since it takes a day and a half to get there, we are leaving Sunday instead of tomorrow, and will head to Florida after we are done at the factory.

This video shows the overide method and the manual method without the motors. the motors are very easy to disengage. I hope you get the issue worked out soon.

We checked on our trailer this morning at the factory service center. They had the slide completely off. Apparently there is a lot more damage that was caused by the water leak we had. This is what had caused the bed to separate from the wall before.

According to the service manager, there was some de-lamination and warping, and this is what they feel made the motors go out of sync. They will finish the job later today, but prefer to keep the unit in over night so they know it is completely dry.

We are pleased that they are doing a thorough job. So we are here for another night. We will be on the road some time tomorrow morning, arriving in Florida on Friday.

Here is a picture of our trailer in the shop with the slide off.

Same thing happened to ours - was only sealed 50% when it was built. Lucky for you you were able to take it to the factory. The RV dealer where ours was repaired did some very sloppy repairs.
But - it all started from poor workmanship at the factory and a poor design with the slide system.
