Surge Protection

I'm thinking I want to purchase a surge protector for my new 5th wheel. I've never used one before, figured that's what the fuse panel was for, but with all the electronics I'm thinking it's probably worth it. Anyone have any experience with a particular model? I've been looking at the ones on Amazon that are between $105 and $150.

Thanks

All rvs should have one, IMO they should be hardwired from the factory. That being said your fuses won't come close to protecting your electronics unless you just have short somewhere. The surge protector covers low voltage, high voltage, & wires crossed in the park panel. Don't go cheap, get a good quality, it's cheap insurance.

I think I'm going to go with the SSP-50XL from Progressive. Not sure I am understanding how this works the more I look at it. So it looks like this is just going to shut down power if there is a surge, not protect from brown outs or provide protection for the air conditioner like the more expensive ones?

Surge Protection

SeanRn you are correct the model you are looking at does not perform over/under voltage protection. It will provide surge and incorrect wiring. I have attached a good comparison chart.

I'm in a seasonal park for now. We have occasional power loss from storms in the summer. I'm mostly concerned about not frying the circuits in the unit. I'm confident the pedestal is good, I've been on the same site for 13 years without any problems.

What are y'all buying the portable or the hard wired with more gizmo's?

I installed the hardwired HW50C in the area below my power panel and put the remote in the pantry above.

If you have the funds, buy the hardwired units from Progressive. They pretty much protect you from everything. I have the HW50C and could not be happier. I have been in the summer storms when the system shut the power off to the RV because of Low voltage in one of the feeds. It has also protected our RV when we were not there, from another voltage issue. They are designed to protect your AC units and other electrical items... when you look at it from that perspective, they are actually very cheap and you are buying a very well made American product that has an awesome support team behind it.

I can rationalize any expenditure. I don't want to over think this situation. I haven't had a surge protector in or on any of my RVs and haven't had a problem. I recently added them to my home electronics over the past several years. The ones I have at home don't have low voltage protection. I want something that is going to shut off the power from blowing up my electronics.

How do you know where to install it?

The dealer offered, for a price of course, to install a surge protector on the brand new 270BH we are purchasing. We would install it ourselves if we knew where to do it, if we had the schematics of the trailer.

I would like to have your input on this asap.

Phenix, if you are going to install a hardwired protector you just need to find a good place to locate the unit were the main power feed comes in. I placed mine in the open area under the power panel, there was enough of the power input cable to cut it and place protector inline. My picture is in this thread.

Take a look at the upgrades section of this fourm and you will see several posts with pictures of the locations they have been installed. Near the power panel appears to be the most popular location.

How can I figure out where the main power feed comes in? Is there somewhere I can find the schematics of my trailer?

If you are having trouble with figuring out where the power comes in, you might be better off having the dealer or an electrician do it for you.
Electricity is not something to monkey with.
It can kill you.

You could just purchase the portable unit and a pad lock...Almost all the campgrounds have the type of pedestal that you can lock the portable protectors in with a pad lock...

That's what we'll probably end up doing. Hubby's good with anything electric but he doesn't feel comfortable without the schematics of the trailer...
