Interesting. But I would caution that not all companies that are certified ISO or QS adhere to the standards during production, a significant number only update 2 weeks before an audit and thus give the apperance for certification. The truth is that the quality of the workforce has mor to do with maintaining quality that the certification, not being mean just an observation I have made as a lead auditor for ISO9000, also as an engineering manager for several manufacturing companies. Just about everyone does the right things if they think they are being watched. But human nature, unfortunatly, allows things to pass that are deamed "ok" even if they are outside the tolerances.

You have to wonder based on the number of Chinese tire problems reported on the Internet. But, then again, how fast was the RV traveling before the failure? Was the coach overloaded? What about tire pressures? It does make you wonder.

In the "real world" these certifications are more about keeping paperwork straight than maintaining quality. All of the so called audits that our company has had to keep our ISO or other certifications were what does your paper work say you are supposed to do and having someone say "sure, that is what we do". Suffice it to say I am not sold on any type of certification,it is all just paperwork.

If the workers do not care about quality but more about quantity and profit, all the paperwork in the world will not let them make a good product.

Having said all that, quality problems sure aren't limited to Asia!!.

Working for several ISO organizations I completely agree that the only time people care (other than the company's ISO compliance / coordinator) about the ISO audit is the 1-2 weeks before the audit.
