To cover, or not to cover......

I've seen a lot of discussion on the forum about whether or not to cover our Crossroads product, so I emailed CR directly. Here is the answer I got from a retail services tech...

"Crossroads doesn’t have a stance on RV covers. It is purely customer’s discretion on whether to use one or not. Thanks

I have gone back to ask if I can infer from this that to cover, or NOT to cover has no impact on warranty. I'll keep you posted.

That sounds like a great answer to CYA. I have seen folks cover and not I can see pros and cons each way. This should being out post of why people cover and concerns they may have.

Yes, I'd like to see pros and cons (aside from what the manufacturer might say), as I had boats for years and sometimes covered them, sometimes didn't..

Crossroads does say no to covers.

I think, regardless of Crossroad's stance, there is an element of common sense here (GASP!).

If you have a legitimate warranty claim on your unit, Crossroads should, and generally will, honor it. If you have a problem that may have been caused by a cover, then you have to understand CR's point of view. Paint chaffing, a leak caused by a bent/broken gutter extension, or something similar caused by an RV cover will NOT be warranted.

We do not cover. I have 2 friends who always cover. Does mine get dirtier over winter - yes, but I personally choose not to cover. I agree that a comparison would be helpful for those who aren't sure, but ultimately it is a personal choice, and really has minimal effect on major, warrant-able defects.

Goes without saying...but I guess folks need to think about what they want the cover to accomplish. Covers may (I say May because I have not formed an opinion either way, here) help reduce fading from the sun. Covers may increase moisture inside the RV. Covers could damage exterior protuberances if one isn't careful, or if strong winds come along. So I guess it would be helpful if folks had all the pros and cons from folks who have and haven't used covers so they can make an informed choice, since the Crossroads says don't use them stance doesn't seem to be their actual stance, at leas not as of today. That could be a new stance and could be subject to change. YMMV...

I think one of the determining factors is where you store you rig.
Under trees you risk leaf issues fall and spring. Branch fall and stains (particularly oak) can be tough to remove and clean. Open areas present their own challenges. Climate is also a factor. So you must pick what you decide is the lesser of the evils.
I also have been given contradictory information.
I guess that covers it.

This is copied from the Crossroads website in the FAQ section;

Quote:
It is not recommended that your RV be wrapped with any type of cover. The rubber roof material needs to breathe and be allowed to dry thoroughly to prevent mold and mildew. According to the roof material supplier, the chalky look of the rubber is normal. Parking under an overhang or in a large garage is acceptable.
So maybe you should ask Rodney Jackson from Crossroads why that is on their Official website.

Just took the cover off our rig. We are on Long Island in New York. Was a pretty bad winter snow wise. No detrimental effects seen on my roof. In fact the roof and the rig in general stayed cleaner. Ours is stored in a field in the back of a County Park and I believe that keeping the sun off the interior materials over the winter was also helpful, no fading of interior fabrics.

I was going to take mine to the under ground storage for the winter. Few things changed my mind was all the humidity and the fact I had to call days to just get into the camper. So I decided to keep it at home. I was thinking about the cover and never got it just a cover for the Air conditioner. We had a nasty winter with it left out and in the open. when all said and don I got up clened off the roof and whole camper and it looks great. I am happy that I just did this. I did get up before we had a Ice storm and took 1 1/2 feet off of the 2 feet at the time on it. being very careful not to disturb the roof in any way. (I hated that job)
