trailer wiring

HI when i hook my truck to the trailer and plug it in ,it blows the charging fuse on my truck, if not pluged in it is fine, the fuse is the big 30 amp under the hood, on a 02 2500 gmc the trailer plug on the the truck is factory, not after market.

Has anyone else had this problem thanks Alleycat

By any chance did you hook up the trailer battery backwards?

Disconnect the battery and see if it still blows the fuse. Could be the battery is connected wrong or if someone changed the trailer plug on the trailer they may have wired it wrong.

I checked the battery yesterday it's wired up properly check the trailer plug on my truck gets wired up properly so I'm not sure, right now on the wire that feeds the trailer plug in my truck which is in the fuse panel under the hood it has a 30 amp fuse in it maybe the fuse might not be heavy enough

Check the 7 way plug on the camper. Sometimes with a used camper it may have been changed and not wired correctly.

Check the junction box for the obvious loose wire( should be on the frame near the front). Then disconnect the tail light wire from the harness and plug the harness into the truck if it dosn't blow a fuse then you know your good to the juction box. Next, go back to the tail light wire and use an ohm meter touch it to the wire and to the frame, if you get a reading or beep depending on the tester that will tell you you have a short some where in the trailer, then start looking at fixturesfor loose wires.

If you have a test light look at the plug diagram above. Connect the alligator clip to the" -" post on the battery then with the trailer plug from the trailer in hand have the raised notch at the 12 o clock position and check the terminal at the 11 o clock position. It should have 12 volts and light the test light. If not continue around the plug and see where you have 12 volts.

Start with this test.

Also do all the lights - stop turn and clearance work correctly and if you pulled it did the brakes work?

If you do not have a test light you should pick one up. They are cheap and really come in handy for things like this.

There is a dead short somewhere. I would draw a diagram of the fuse panel in the camper, label where all the fuses go, which fuse and what amperage. Take all the fuses out. Go to an auto parts store and buy a breaker to go into the truck that keeps blowing. And install one fuse at a time in the camper, till one pops the breaker in the truck fuse box. That way you can isolate which circuit is causing the fuse in the truck to blow.

I must have a short cuz it's blowing the 40 amp fuse but it only blows it when I'm driving down the road , looks like I got a project going to have to start tearing it apart

All the lights work the brakes work everything works there's power at the truck plug where it's supposed to be I think that Lovin and if the truck's not plugged in the fuse is fine if it's parked in the driveway it doesn't blow the fuse but going down the road it blows a fuse

Sounds like there is a bare wire some where in the line, and when you are bouncing down the road it touches bare metal and shorts out.
Some of the guys have found the brake wires are rubbed bare either in the axle or where they go thru the hole to get into the axle.

If it was in the brake system should it not blow the fuse in the trailer instead of the big main fuse in my truck I'm not sure I'm just trying to figure out how the circuits work any suggestions I might have to go to the dealer and see if I can get a wiring diagram to see when it comes off the truck where that big black wire goes ,if it goes straight to the inverter or to the main fuse is in the trailer thanks,I we'll keep trying

Don't count on getting a Rv wiring diagram. George wires the rv different than Pete and both are different than Harry. In other words, no rv has a definitive wiring diagram.
