Under bed storage strut stuck in open position

Hello all. got myself in a bit of a pickle here. Doing some serious cleaning on my unit, including removing the 60x80 mattress that sits on top of a storage box. Long story short, the access door to the under-bed storage is now stuck in the open position, and I cannot figure out how to release it

I'm sure it is simple to do, once somebody tells me how

thanks!

One of things happened. First and most likely it’s not stuck. You simply need to put the mattress back on or have enough (distributed) load to compress the strut.

If that doesn’t work. You may have popped the limit in the strut opening it without a load and it needs to be replaced.

Hoping for the first. Let us know.

Thanks, Mark. I pushed as hard as I could and could not close it, so unfortunately, it's not the first. I'm pretty sure it's the latter. I just removed it and will be heading up to the auto part store for a replacement.

I spent my working life as an engineer, and am disappointed to think someone was paid to design such a lousy component. There is no reason to ever allow it to extend too far in the first place!

Oh well, live and learn...

Guess I lucked out after all! I took the current strut with me to my local autozone. He went and got the one he had and took it out of the package. He placed one end on the counter and was able to push it closed. Now. I had already tried mine at home with no success, but I really laid in it this time, and it closed! So I went home and reinstalled my old one, but positioned myself for maximum leverage without (hopefully) breaking the plywood. I gave it a hard shove, and it closed! So I'm all buttoned up and back in business!

So, I owe the design engineer an apology … I keep a bottle of ketchup handy, for occasions like this when I have to eat crow!

You have the opposite problem that we have. Our strut is not strong enough to keep the storage area open, we resort to a dowel to hold it up.

Had the same problem. My bride decided she had had enough one day and ordered a new set of struts (much longer). We replaced them at the factory location on top and then i placed them as far forward (toward the head of the bed) as far as they would go. Had to reposition a couple of times but they work now.
