We had to pull over to the side of I-86 last weekend to tighten down something in the truck bed. There was plenty of room to get off of the roadway, and I could see traffic coming for about two miles, so safety wasn't an issue this time, but it got me to thinking.

We all stand the chance of having to pull over in places I wouldn't park a car, let alone 50+ feet of truck/camper. The ideal set up would be to install halogen (very expensive) or LED flashers on the upper corners of the rear ofa camper. Having them 12' high should give other motorists plenty of warning. I realize that warning triangles, or good ol' road flares would also work, but I don't feel like walking back 150' to retrieve the triangle, or dispose of the flares.

Has anyone installed flashers; how did you install them; how effective are they? Thanks.

I have a yellow flashing light like you find attached to barricades at a construction site. It works with a six volt lantern battery which will last for many years. I have never used it, but I will be able to attach it to the ladder on the rear of my fiver if I ever need to. I can't tell you where to buy one as the company I used to work for was throwing them away and I took a couple. I can also place them on top of my ice shack in winter to warn vehicles of my location during the night. If you can find them, they should be pretty inexpensive.

I looked on google and found some on here for about $70.

I have a set of triangular reflectors that truckers use, in case I have a breakdown. If I'm stopping along the roadside for a short time, I always turn on the four-way flashers. It shows the two brake lights on the trailer flashing and is intended to warn approaching traffic. If that isn't enough to warntrafficcoming frombehind then those driversneed to review thedrivers handbook.

Just get one of thesehttp://www.westhaverassociates.com/flashcube/or make your own using an automotive flasher. In the flash mode all the running lights would flash including the ones up high on the back of your camper.

I have a yellow strobe light with a magnet on the base and a long cord to plug into the 12v source in the basement. If it's ever needed, I can plug it in and take it back to the rear and stick it on the bumper or just put it on the ground behind the trailer.

Hopefully, it won't get any work.

I use the reflective triangles as well. I figure if some jackass can't get the picture, the 5er would have toact as a safety barrrier.

Not sure about other states, but in Wi. if you don't move over "if the lane is clear" for a disabled vehicle, you could face a $150 ticket. I have heard of times when Wisconsin's finest will sit with a disable vehicle waiting and pull those over who don't move lanes.

I totally agree with having to move over for a disabled vehicle. However, I can tell you from many yearsexperience as aPolice Officer that, while most folks doove over, there are always other folks who drive around in a fog, or their heads up thier...well, up there.

Warning lights aren't a cure-all, they simply don't grab everyone's attention. I've personally seen tow-trucks, disabled vehicles, and Emergency Vehicles get demolished by inattentive drivers; and that was with every darned flashers/light bars going. Get's you're attention, and makes you reconsider your relationship with Jesus, let me tell ya.

I think I'm going to go with the Flashcube, PLUS the triangles. At least I shouldn't be held liable in the event we do get clobbered.
