Hey Everyone,

Well the season is over for me up here in Michigan, so it is time for some repairs.

Myelbow fitting that screws right into the water heater tank, developed a leak where it screws into the water heater. I took off the fitting, and the hose had to come with it too, that goes into one of the bypass shutoffs.

The fitting is of course plastic, and the water heater where it screws into looks to be aluminum. What type of pipe sealant should I use to seal it back up when screwed in?

It looks like whoever put it together or worked on it last, used some sort of pipe dope on it. It kind of looks like the type of pipe dope used to seal black gas pipe in a house.

Any ideas what to use? I was figuring teflon tape.

Also should I replace the hose that came off with the fitting just to be safe?

Thanks

Brian

Teflon tape will work as long as you use 9-10 wraps. I prefer pipe dope which is made by several companies. Just make sure it says OK for potable water. Replacing the fitting may not be neccessary but they are cheap so why not?
