Ready to pick up my travel trailer but before I do, I thought I'd check with my fellow CrossRoads friends to ask, how do I make the travel trailer work off the battery alone so that when I'm in transit, the refrigerator will stay cold? I'm new to this camping thing so excuse the question if you think I'm in "left field."

Turn LP on, go back to your stove and turn the stove on and light it first, ( this will let you know you have gas in the lines, then shut the stove off) then set the switch to auto on the fridge, and touch the start button, you will hear it clicking, it will try three times and then stop if there is no gas to light. I always confirm that its lit before pulling off by going outside and removing cover on fridge and listen for gas flame noise. Just how I do things.

Sorry, battery alone, not sure it will work, I think its a 110 volt or LP gas the igniter will light from battery though. hey I'm new too. guess I better read the book

Thanks for the reply, amishco. I thought I remember hearing from the salesman that you could run the frig off the battery (no gas) alone as your travel trailer is in transit. He also said you would be charging your battery by simply plugging in your lights.

I'll definately read my owners book when I pick up my trailer just to confirm.

Remember to turn the refrigerator off when you stop to get gas. I've found that if I'm only going to be traveling a few hours I'll turn the refrigerator off when I leave and turn it back on when I arrive. There's enough cold stuff in there to keep it cold for a long time.

i turn my fridge on the night before we leave. load it up in the morning, leave it on until the first stop, which with the kids is usually an hour or so, then i turn it off for the rest of the trip. the food stays plenty cold.

Wow, I never thought of turning the fridge off during a fuel up, that is kind of scary as I did not do it on our first trip last Friday, nor would I probably have thought about ithad it not been for this forum. trust me it will never happen again. what about tunnels on the turnpike?

I can't imagine that tunnels would be an issue unless it was really looooooooooooooong
Since we leave ours off when we are towing we don't worry about it.

I'm not positive, but it seems to me there are some tunnels out east that state you have to shut off the LP.

I am wondering about weigh scales, Must I pull in to scales that are open for trucks while pulling an RV?

This was copied from RV.NET website on LB Gas and Tunnels: Different tunnels different rules, the tunnels into and around New York City and the lower level of the George Washington Bridge, NO PROPANE. The Baltimore Harbor tunnel, NO PROPANE OVER OVER 10 LB, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, PROPANE MUST BE TURNED OFF. PA Turnpike, I think it must be turned off, but I'm not sure on that one. If you know that you are going to be going thru a tunnel and are not sure, call ahead, (Tunnel Authority, Police)It's worth the call, the fines are heavy.
