Campgrounds near train/bus into NYC

Anyone tried to camp outside of New York City and take public transportation to/from Manhattan? Putting together a trip, not finding campgrounds close that have nicer amenities more than the usual overnight stops. Will spend most of the time hanging around the campground so looking for campgrounds that have higher ratings for cleanliness, activities.

Any help appreciated.

We have tried, but never found anything.

You have to choose, either proximity, or amenities. We haven't found anything with both.

Liberty Harbor RV "resort" is in NJ and there is a ferry stop in the campground that takes to Manhatten in about 10 minutes, but it is really nothing more than a parking lot with hook ups. Spaces barely wide enough to open your slides. We stayed here many years ago with a much smaller trailer. I am not sure I would even try it with my current trailer.

When we did a trip to Main, we stayed at Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY. Nice enough place. The sites were not bad size wise, it had a clean, well kept pool, and putt-putt. BUT it is an hour and a half by commuter train to the city.

I will be watching the thread to see if anyone else knows of some place closer because we want to head back up there next year.

Thanks for the reply. We will look into staying in Florida. I looked at Liberty Harbor and said "no way". The hour and half train ride doesnt seem so bad after seeing photos of their "campsites". As fate would have it, we had to bail on going to NY and are staying in the area. Looking at a possible October trip.

Campgrounds near train/bus into NYC

Look for something around Hamilton, NJ. Even on the PA side of the river it's a nice area. Bout an hour to the city by train.

Stayed at the Black Bear Campground for a week 4 years ago. Decent campground in upstate New York. Close to outlet mall, Orange County Choppers and a short drive to a train station with service to the city. Bus tours of New York also leave right from the campground. It's ratings aren't the best but location is decent. Might be something better in the area for quality. Recently people are saying the price has gone up and it's not worth the money since they haven't improved the campground.
