cherokee landing state park lake tenkiller Oklahoma

Cherokee landing state park is located near Tahlequah Oklahoma. lake tenkiller was created by building a dam on the Illinois river. The water tends to be colder and clearer than most lakes in oklahoma. Cherokee landing is located where the Illinois river enters the lake. This has caused the formation of a large sandbar type area off the point this makes for a great area to swim/float around. there is a designated swimming area near the boat launch.

The good, this is an access controlled park gates close at 10. there is a store located just outside the park and teh Tahlequah walmart is about 12 miles away. The park is very nice, golf carts are allowed and available to rent. there is a disc golf course on site. The campsites are level cement pads with water and electric, there is an onsite boat ramp and swimming area, there is a day use pavilion and bathrooms. This campground is located near most of the upper Illinois river raft outfitters. There are multiple gas stations in the area that can accommodate rvs.

The bad, the bathrooms were destroyed in a storm many years ago and the new bathrooms are glorified outhouses. The dump station is a 3x3 open hole with a cover over it. if the lid was left off a small child or pet could fall in, to me this is safety hazard and should be fixed. Tahlequah is a college town so there is a lot of day use by college students. the boat ramp is located inside the camping area and gets alot of use.

this is a very nice state park and we will be back but it has the worst dump station i have ever used.
