We're planning a trip from Chicago to Graceland via Shawnee National foest. Does anyone have favorite campgrounds you can recommend? There are many sites around Shawnee but we're never been there before.

Also, from what we've been reading, the area around Graceland is not safe (Graceland is). Any suggestions on a safe campground?

Thanks and travel safe

Last April we stayed at the campground that is right adjacent to Graceland and the Heartbreak Hotel. There was a guard posted at the entrance for security. Campground was quiet, and we walked to visit Graceland. I would stay there again. The area around Graceland looked a little run down, but didn't seem that bad to me. We ate at one of the local BBQ joints that provided free pink Cadillac shuttle service to and from our campground, and the food was great.

Graceland RV Park and Campground has mostly high reviews at www.campgroundreviews.com. Not to be confused with Elvis Presley Blvd RV Park, which is not rated as well. Memphis is a pretty rough city overall. Some of the suburbs like Germantown and Collierville are decent, but I'd be careful not to make a wrong turn in some sections of Memphis.

If you are looking for something halfway in between, there is Ferne Clyffe State Park which is probably the closets thing to Shawnee National Forest. There are also four EXCELLENT campgrounds around the Rend Lake area that we stay at almost every weekend. Our favorite is Gun Creek, then South Sandusky, South Marcum, then North Sandusky. If you need more info about these, let me know. We are pretty spoiled down here with the amount of campgrounds that we can get to going any direction in about 20-30 minutes.
