I can't believe I am saying this but my kids (12 and 7) area little tiredof Myrtle Beach. We have gone therefor the past 5 years and they want a break. We "did"Florida a few years back and they loved it sothey want togo there again for their "beach vacation".Wehave about 3 weeksto spend. We are looking for some places like Ocean Lakes Campgroundin Myrtle Beach. Somewhere that is right on the ocean, has its own activities and is just a fun place to spend some time. We do not want to spend the entire time in 1 spot (like we have done in MB). We know we want to spend some time in the Keys (loved snorkeling), the gulf coast and the panhandle area.I would like to check out the Silver Springs area as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Silver River State Park!! http://www.floridastateparks.org/Silverriver/ Rent canoes at the park and paddle up toSilver Springs. Water is clear as glass and wildlife abounds. Museum on the State Park grounds as well. Great facilities too and oneof the best State Park campgrounds in the state.

Lonnie,

You may also want to take a look atRainbow Springs State Park. http://www.floridastateparks.org/rainbowsprings/ The campground was recently redone and all RV sites have full hookup. Tubing is very popular in this spring fed river, several outfitters can set you up and the park has a tram service too. This is one that we've been wanting to get to and expect to take a trip there this year.

Was it Rainbow Springs or Silver Springs that many years ago was a "privately owned attraction" but the state of Florida bought it and turned it into a state park? Or, am I totally confused?

Rainbow Springs was an attraction that back in the day had "submarines" you could view the springs from and also had beautiful gardens. The web site link I posted has some of the history of the attraction and the campgrounds.

Mickey Mouse and I-75/I-95 combined a one-two punch that put quite a few old time attractions out of business. The latest to finally bite the dust is Cypress Gardens. A couple of amusement corporations tried their turn at management leases from the State and failed. A couple of weeks ago a press release now states that Lego-Land is coming and it will the largest in the world. They pledged to incorporate a couple of the Cypress Gardens features. My son can't wait!

Silver Springs is also owned by the State of Florida (purchased in 1993) and the attraction is managed through long term leases. The state recognized these attractions as natural treasures and historic landmarks. The glass bottom boat was invented in 1878 and the head spring is the largest artesian well in the world! Tarzan movies were filmed on the river and Sea Hunt was also filmed there for the underwater scenes. Silver Springs is separate from Silver River State Park and requires admission fees.

Sorry for the history lesson.... I can bore you even worse if we were sitting at a campfire!

Here's a really cool website about the lost Florida Attractions. http://www.lostparks.com/index.htmlEdited by: BDLuke

Thanks for the info! I am sorry to hear about Cypress Gardens. We visited Florida many times when I was a kid and I remember going to Silver Springs, Rainbow Springs, Cypress Gardens, several "Gator" parks as well as WDW. As soon as I saw the leaf shaped monorail from Rainbow Springs the memories just came flooding back. I also remember eating at arestaraunt called the "Kapok Tree Inn" or something similar to that. I can remember it was a big deal but that is about all. I am pretty sure I read that place was also gone. Anyway, thanks for the link and info.

Kapok Tree Inn! I forgot all about that place! I never made it there, but I remember some co-workers getting a group to up for dinner before it shut down. Too pricey for my blood, I guess it still would be even now.. I googled and found this cool site. Looks like the building is still there and you can go in and look around. http://benzplace.com/kapok/index.html Amazing what some people will do with their spare time.

Did you go seeWeeki Wachee Springs and the Mermaids or Homosassa Springs when you were a kid? They're both still there under State Park control.

Beach campgrounds are getting fewer as the years role on. Here are a list of a few that I'm aware of. Hopefully, some others will chime in and be able to give you some more. I remember the great writeup you posted from your last trip down here so I'll try to avoid some of the RV parks you went to then.

Clearwater:

Fort Desoto - County Park - you have to book early to get in here! http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/05_Ft_Desoto.htm

Pan Handle:

Topsail Hill -http://www.floridastateparks.org/top...ll/default.cfm

Hope this helps some. Have a great time!

Bob,

Thanks for all the info.I never went to Homosassa or Weeki Wachee as a kid but when we went to Florida a couple fo summers back we went. The kids got a real kick out of Weeki Wachee and Homosassa Springs was really nice.

Thanks again!
