We are planning a trip to see Mt Rushmore and the surroundingarea for next month. Can anyone recommend any campgrounds in that area? We would like to stay somewhere centrally located to Rushmore, <?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="&#111;n"><st1lace w:st="&#111;n">Rapid City</st1lace></st1:City>, Deadwood, etc... I found a place called Hidden Valley Campground that looks like a good location, but I can't find any info/reviews other than theCG’s web site. I would appreciateany information on this CG, or any others in the area.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />

We stayed in Custer SP Gamelodge section for a few nights and love it. The Gamelodge section is the only campground in the park that is fenced. Otherwise you'll have wildlife coming right into your camp. We then moved to Elk Horn Ridge in Spearfish which was probably the nice campground we ever stayed at. I guess I should call a resort not a campground. Paved sites, paved roads, nice pool, nice park for the kids, very clean shower / toliet house. **Note ElkHorn Ridge won't allow on site fires because of the National Forest._popupControl();

We stayed at Big Pine campground in Sept, 2008. It was rustic, in the pines - sites a good distance apart. Used Passport America for some good prices. We were there for a week - great weather to camp - owners were very helpful. Enjoy your trip.

We stayed at the kOA 4 miles from Mt Rushmore. Good place for the kids as they have lots to do. This cg is about 5 miles from Hill City. You do not have good cell phone coverage

Spearfish has a nice city park campground with some full hook-ups. We stayed in one of the campgrounds in Custer State Park a few years ago and found it very nice.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, we still haven't made up our mind on a campground. There are soooo many in the area. We were originally planning on staying closer to Deadwood, but now we're thinking we might be better off closer to the Hill City, Rushmore area. Seems like there's more to see down that way.

We are planning our vacation to South Dakota for this summer. Our plan is to stay in the Badlands area, then move to a campground in the Custer City area. Then move up to the Deadwood/Bear Butte area. Is Rafter J central to a lot of the points of interest in the lower Black Forest area, or is there a campground in Custer City that is a better choice. Looking at a map,Rafter Jlooks like a distance from wind cave and some other places.Any campground ideas for the Badlands area and the deadwood area? Anyone been there want to share any ideas of must sees?

In the Badlands if you don't mind dry camping the National park CG is great to be right there for evening interpitive shows otherwise we've stayed just west in Interior on 377(CG isn't much but does have pool and hook-ups).The President's in Custer was nice,centraly located.Edited by: we-canoe
