Ohio to Colorado

Mullling over a possible trip to the rockies. Only have two weeks, figuring nearly 3 days on the road there and back. Any suggestions appreciated.

Suggestions for what? Stuff to see? Route to take?

We went from easternOntario to Colorado Springs in four days last fall. We traveled through Detroit to get there, but could have gone south of Lake Erie and through Ohio just as easily. It took us one day to get to Detroit, so then it was three days to CS. They were long days driving.

As a kid we camped everywhere. A favorite vacation was to see the Grand Teton's and Yellowstone when I was in high school. We hit Rushmore on the way back.

Made for a fun packed vacation - also in 2 weeks. Basically you have 3 days out and back. I believe we took 4 days back to stop a few places.

When in Wyoming, make sure to take in Wild Bill Cody's ranch. It was also very cool.

Bump.

We did West Yellowstone few years ago. Only have two weeks this year. Mulling over what to see in Colorado. Rocky Mountain National Park looks awesome, but can't really camp up there easily on full hookup sites. Also, west of Denver seems like the best launching point to see as much as possible.

Thinking of going I70 out to catch the sand dunes with a stay in Alamosa and a day stay near the dunes ., head north to Breckenridge as our base for most of the stay and take I80 home.

We used to go to the Estes Park, Rocky Mountain Park area. We even lived in Denver for a few years. The last time we went to the area, we thought it was really over crowded. We enjoy the southern and the middle part of the state. Fewer people. Here are some of our favorite places: Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde, Durango-Silverton narrow guage railroad, Ouray, Telluride, Lake City, Spanish Peaks. Camping at the Sand Dunes is difficult. All the sites are very short. There is good camping at the Black Canyon. I don't think there are hook-ups but there are decent pull-through sites. We like the National Forest campgrounds. Quite of few of them have hook-ups now. Mesa Verde has a few hook-up sites at Morefield. I think the mountains around Telluride and Ouray are the most beautiful in Colorado. There is a great RV park in Silverton. You can watch the train come in and out of the town.

Like jlongsta said, you can't go wrong at Ouray and Durango area. One of our favorite places in Colorado was camping at Stillwater campground on Lake Granby. Great views. Camp has electricity and water hookups. The town of Grand Lake is good also.

Hi fellow Kansan ajlight. I'm retiring in July. We plan to spend our first month of retirement in Colorado in the LaVeta area. We love the Spanish Peaks area for hiking and fishing.

We think it will be the best for us..only have two weeks so going further south or west would be adding at least 3 days more drive time.

OhioMark, I totally understand about being limited on time. It seems like two weeks just goes by so fast when you are in your RV and enjoying your family time. Another thing to consider when you are in the mountains. A couple of hundred miles driving in the mountains is certainly different that driving on the interstate. We sometimes drive 150 miles to get from one place in Colorado to another. It is usually a full day's drive when you are going up and down passes and on curvey mountain roads.

Thanks for the heads up..we know it well after driving Montana and Wyoming.

The wind storms in Iowa and Minnesota did the most to slow us down. we calculate interstate travel at 55 and secondary roads at at or below the speed limit. One traffic jam in Chicago adds a couple hours too.

Winding River Resort in Grand Lake is a good stay Grand Lake CO Cabin Rentals & Camping | Winding River Resort. Sites are big and open, and there are full hookup areas available. We had a dry spot as we have a popup currently. Bathrooms are great if you don't want to go with the full hookups. Easy access to Rocky Mountain National Park and Grand Lake. Plenty of activities for the kids on-site if you just want a lazy day.

That is an area we will be making a trip too as well this year. New camper gets delivered tomorrow, camping trips to be made soon after.
