The Cost of Propane

For years I have been swapping propane tanks when needed. Usually $20 to $24/swap. Today I brought my used-once new tank from our new Z-1 in for a swap, and the hardware guy told me the tank was brand new, and I would be better off with a refill. This (Ace Hardware) store charges $17 for a swap, but only $10 for a refill! That's less than 1/2 what I'm used to paying, and I don't end up with an older tank. You can bet I'll go back there again!

We never swap our tanks anymore. I have accumulated enough give aways that I always have a spare or 2 full that I keep in a shed away from the house, besides the tanks on the trailer. We have a business that sells based on weight. He weighs them before the fill and after the fill.

Basing it on weight shows that you are actually only paying for what you are getting.

He does a lot of business from people that know.

Most all of the swap places here only put 17# in the 20# tank. So you are behind the 8 ball right off the bat.

I don't swap tanks till the expiration date is close! I always refill....cheaper.

Refill is always cheaper. However, you can always swap out an old tank needing inspected for a newer one and refill it when empty.

Price is always reflected by the gallon but it is the weight that tells you how many gallons you have. Is that what you are asking?

Here their hose shows how many gallons they put in. They used to weigh it years ago, but for about 2 years now it's registered in gallons.

Hmmm...not seen that yet. Everyone around here still goes on a scale.

The majority of the re-fill places up here charge a flat rate, using a scale. I now go to Costco, they charge by the actual amount (litres) that they add. I can fill a 30 pounder, from empty, for less than a 20 pounder costs at the flat rate price. 😃

Almost all of the refill places around here measure by the gallon.

I stopped and had a 20 lb. tank refueled today at a flat rate of $14.00. It's down from $16.00 dollars a year ago.

Our campground charges by weight. You pay for what you need.

Also, many campgrounds have refill abilities. Always cheaper, and you can just get it done while you are camped.

$14 refills at BJs warehouse clubs if any members out there. Flat rate though, so take an empty tank.

The BJ's near me will do either flat rate or by the gallon. I'm sure they won't fill my 30 lb. tanks for their flat rate.
