Heading south this coming winter and we're looking for campgrounds in the following cities if anyone can help please:
Eagle Rock, VA
Chapel Hill, NC
Charlotte, NC
Marietta, GA

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Jim- I work in chapel hill. we will need to meet up. no good campground in chapel hill or Durham. if you don't mind water/ electric only hook ups Jordan lake is a nice state park. problem with NC state parks is they close and lock their gates at dusk. if you are not in, you can't get in. not sure what time of year you will be here. the 2 nicest Jordan lake campgrounds are poplar point and crosswinds. if winter they will close one but keep the other open. the online booking site allows you to see a picture of the site and tells you how close to the lake you are. some really pretty sites there and just under 30 min from chapel hill.
here is the website. http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/jord/main.php

For Charlotte we stayed at fort mill koa. it wasn't pretty and was basic (but was at least fhu). it was our staging place for doing all things Charlotte. here is a thread from another forum about places to stay in Charlotte. http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/25670878/srt/pa/pging/1/page/1

another helpful site for you would be www.campgroundgallery.com. maskins (a member here) created this site. it is a rv park review place that includes pictures of campgrounds.

We'll be in Chapel Hill around November 1st...for 5 or 6 days...so hopefully we can get together for sure, we would enjoy the company...whether we come to town or you come out for some dinner or a little chat around the campfire...we'll keep you posted as we get closer...now, how about the NC State Fairgrounds...any ideas or thoughts on that?

Thanks,
Jim

not much at the fairgrounds. I probably would not camp there. it is an open field in Raleigh right next to active train tracks.there is a small campground near me that I haven't been to yet called hidden lake. dH wasn't very impressed with it. unfortunately this area is a bit of a campground wasteland.there is a place I just found on rv park reviews called spring hill mobile home park. it gets good reviews and is in chapel hill area. http://campgroundreviews.com/regions/North_Carolina/Chapel_Hill.html. I would invite you to camp in my driveway but I have no plug ins, the driveway is a hill and I'm in a neighborhood that probably wouldn't allow it (we don't keep TT at the house).

do you have any camping club or resort affiliations (ie coast to coast, passport America, etc)? I know of 2 really nice campgrounds in nc that are coast to coast affiliates. one is in Jackson springs (about 1 1/2 hrs south of Raleigh) and the other one is on the shore.

We have an email in to Spring Hill, waiting for a reply from them. I have found some other sites for the other 3, waiting for replies from them. I have Thousand Trails, Good Sam, and Passport...not sure about my KOA this year...may not renew that one.

Wow, would you? It would be nice to know if it can in fact accommodate big rigs and that it is fairly clean. What I need to remember is that on this trip south, from IL through KY, VA, NC, & SC it will be fall to late fall and most of what we will be doing is sight-seeing...not using the pool or any of the facilities, other than laundry, and of course you can always go to town for that too. So, mainly we're looking for friendly, nice place to have a campfire at night, peaceful, and no outrageously priced LOL. Make sure the fire ring is big enough for you and the family to come sit and share some desert and good chat with us. I hate being right on top of my neighbor.

I would appreciate anything you could find out...I will hold off booking it until I hear further from you...I do have plenty of time.

Jim

Bob,
Thanks, I have heard GA has some of the nicest campgrounds of any state. I will surely check it out...we are only staying in Marietta for 5 days so full hookup isn't necessary, water and electric are the most important...I will definitely check this out...I hope they allow you to book in advance...I don't like surprises LOL.

Thanks again Bob,
Jim

ok so I stopped by spring hill in chapel hill today. It is a mix of permanents and campers. the campground was originally a mobile home park that is being converted to a campground as tenants move out. that said it is clean and well kept up.The manager just recently took over and was still moving in to the house. She used to be a tenant. She said it is quiet and family friendly. I could hear nothing but birds chirping while I was there. The sites are large and big rig friendly and mostly wooded. I saw lots of class A's and 5ers including a new looking redwood on a permanent site. All sites are $32/ night for FHU. Due to county ordinances no campfires are allowed. They said they do fill up on home game weekends for Duke and UNC.

I also checked out a campground near me called Hidden Lake.Run far away from this campground. Small sites. what is there is all rundown permanents that give it a feel of a bad trailer park.

Here are some pictures I took at Spring Lake today.

this is a large pull through site.

This was the road between campsites.

the playground.

hope this helps. instead of the fire we could meet ya out for some good BBQ.

Anaro,
Thanks so much, BBQ it is, we're there. I will call and book this tomorrow. The pull-thru looks pretty good...I can't thank you enough, a picture is worth a thousand words as they say...

Bob,
Thanks,I think Red Mountain is the closest to my wife's cousin so I think that's what we'll be looking at. I'll call the tomorrow and hope I can book in advance.

Oh, and the trucking company plowed out my space, we'll be pulling the old Crusier out next Wed and taking it down to the dealer, so we can get the plates on the way. We've cut the first two weeks off the trip so as to allow me time to heal and to allow anyone who is taking pieces of our furniture to come get them. There is a new Respite House here in town and a girl from my church is heading it so she came yesterday and she basically wants anything that's not nailed down So, hopefully all will be done before the end of April and we'll be on our way.

Thanks all, your help is appreciated...owe you all big time.

Jim
