1st 5th wheeler NH to SC trip questions

Hi,

We've planned a trip from NH to SC the beginning of July. I have made my reservations on stopping, now just a few questions because it's the first time I've towed a trailer going in this direction.

First is going through NY City. We will be driving through NY on Sat, July 4th. Should we take the Tappan Zee Bridge to bypass the George Washington bridge? Or should the GW be ok since it's a Saturday?

Second, while travelling on 95 and pulling a trailer, can you just go through on the high speed easy pass lanes? or do you need to stop at the booths and pay extra since you are pulling a trailer? I just remember when I was younger seeing they used to charge you per axle you had....

Thanks in advance for any help!

Check with each toll road. Most do charge by axles. However, in FL, you just roll right through, trailer and all, and they photograph you and bill you to the address associated with your license plate. No kidding!

I haven't ran into a toll booth that makes you stop. I use the high speed lane. There is a sensor that keeps track of your axles. I've been doing this for quite a few years and never got a penalty summons.

I would use the Tappen Zee & always use the high speed ez pass with no problems. Do not use the tunnels in Baltimore, have a safe trip.

I like 84 thru NY to 81 in PA once in VA you can cut back down to 95 if you want, but I will not go near 95 on NY or NJ. Only adds a couple of hours to the trip. No tolls and a better route. There is a reason that is the main trucking route up to New England.

Welcome to our fine state! If/when Myrtle Beach gets a little crazy for you, take the short drive south and check out Charleston. Everyone loves it. There's plenty more here, too, but Charleston is a must-see!

Thanks Marty. We plan on going to Charleston. Our neighbors son was playing for the Yankees Minor League team there last year and said the same thing. The last time I was in SC was in 1979 and I had DI's yelling at me the whole 3 months I was there! LOL. So I hope this will be a more relaxing visit.

You'll enjoy this, it's an easy stop right around the corner from where they get on the boat to Ft Sumter. Even if you don't get on the boat, you will probably visit this downtown seaside square: The American Military Museum - Charleston, SC's one-of-a-kind experience!

I don't expect you'll travel inland much, but make a note for next time. We have a Famcamp on Shaw AFB, but even better, our MWR folks run a camping resort at Lake Wateree. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Water...a/149607884143
Welcome, and just "holler" if you need help!

x2,

Charleston is a one of kind place. So much history and a beautiful city. July will be a little sticky, but worth it. Easily my favorite destination.

We stayed at Lakewood, which is right next to Ocean Lakes. Been there about 10 years now and love. No matter where you stay, you will have a great time in Myrtle Beach. Don't forget to check out Crabby Mikes seafood buffet. Fantastic.
