Camping in August

My sister-in-law watches the dog and our house while we camp. She has "suggested" we camp for a week in August. I am happy to oblige her and take a little vacation. We live in west central Ohio and are looking for something that takes a day to get to and a day back home. We've been to Gatlinburg, Michigan, Amish country in Holmes County and Shipshewana. I need ideas as to places to visit. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The Finger Lakes area of north-west New York State is very nice. There is a beautiful State park there called Letchforth which is south of Rochester. It has a breathtaking gorge with three waterfalls as well as a dry dam where they give free tours. The park also has a large public swimming pool. The sites are mostly quite large and treed. If you like antiquing, the nearby town of Mount Morris is good for that. (We don't, but lots of people do.)

I checked both Pittsburgh and Letchforth. Pittsburgh has three festivals in August and a whole lot to do. Lethforth is beautiful and the pictures I saw were stunning. Thanks for both suggestions.

I think East Tawas State park in Michigan is nice. Right on Lk Huron. Not too far from you.

Ludington, Michigan is the best.

Along with Letchworth State Park in NY, you could also try Alleghany State Park near Jamestown, NY. It is quite underrated and beautiful with a lot of things to do onsite and nearby.

I've researched all of the above suggestions and what I have found makes me want to go to all of them. Great selections. We are planning a New England tour in 2015 and will try to work in as many of the eastern campground suggestions as possible. Noticed there are Michigan parks I never heard of and can't wait to try.

Which of course is less than an hour drive from my area which offers plenty of outdoor recreation: Alleghney Reservoir / Kinzua Dam
