Colorado information

Okay...we are in the pre-planning stages for a trip to colorado next year. We plan to start around Estes Park and then go toward the south-west end of the state, wrapping up near colorado springs before heading back to Illinois. One the first leg of trip, leaving Estes Park, is route 34 going west very friendly to longer rv's? I was thinking about taking that down to 40, and then take 70 across to Grand Junction. The road looks REAL curvy on the map, so I was thinking it might just be easier to go back down to 270 and catch 70 outside of denver. The trip will most likely be in June....most of the snow should be gone by then....

I dont believe you can tow a vehicle over Trail Ridge Road (US 34). While a must see at over 12,000 feet there are many options available. There are several campgrounds in the canyon between Estes Park and Loveland that you can make as a base and drive into Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Then when you depart you can drive south on I-25 to I-70 or you can go all the way to Walsenburg and over La Veta pass and Wolf Creek pass to Durango, Mesa Verde, Cortez ect. Or you can leave north out of Loveland on 287 and catch 14 and take the Cache La Poudre drive over Cameron Pass and Big Muddy pass then either loop south out of Kremmling back to I-70 or west over Rabbit Ears pass to Craig and down the western edge of the state to Grand Jct. Then south to where you want to go.The southern route would be faster if time is a factor.

Thanks for the information. Right now I am thinking about the KOA's in the area. I am definatetly looking at the basecamp idea for a few days in each area...just starting to work on the logistics....

when we left estes park we went back out to the interstate then down to colo. sps, then to the royal gorge,then durango and finally mesa verde.

added 1 picture of hwy 34 in rcky mtn park in 2009,,, sept 2006 stayed at spruce park ok spots can walk to conv store and some restaraunts,2009 stayed at koa clean and friendly but spots too tight and not really near anything but has veiw of lake

If you are going to Grand Junction you might want to look at traveling down to Ouray. Old mining town surrounded by mountians. We have been there many times. Nice campground in town on the river.

Will have to check that out...good thing is that we have almost a year to plan the trip
