Anyone been to the Crazy Horse Memorial, the work in progress? Am considering that trek after the 2011 Factory Rally in Indiana ...

Hi Ruck, We were there last year. Crazy horse, It's a must see butwatch the video inside first before you take the bus back to the monument. Also go see mount rushmore during the day and at night. IT"S AMAZING. Custer Park is another MUST. It's a drive thru the park. We had to wait for the buffalo to move so we could continue to drive. Alot of wild life to see. Also A MUST see is the BADLANDS. You can drive through with your unit if you want to. It's on your way out or back. The Badlands is about 1 hour drive before you get to Mount Rushmore or Crazy Horse. We stayed at Rafter J which was 5 minutes away from Mt. Rushmore and Crazyhorse. A Very nice campground. Enjoy and have a safe trip. Be ready for the strong winds when you hit South Dakota. Randy

We were there last year as well even stayed a Rafter J... great place. Crazy Horse is a work in progress and will be for sometime. The same family is doing all the work on private funds. the story is they will not accept Government money because of the strings attached. This is a memorial for the American Indians. Rushmore is also a must see!!!!! both day and night. We went in the morning and returned that evening. We will return to the area someday and see the other places.

have fun

the KOA in the Badlands is nice, if you want to take a break before the Black Hills. I would agree with all of the suggestions given. We stayed in Custer State Park, but just over the cattle guard, as I like seeing those buffalo, just not right outside the camper door at dawn!!

We have been twice, the last time in July 2010. There was little progress noted from our earlier visit in 2008 and the main buildings at the entrance seemed to be a little worse for the wear. The museum of Native American artifacts was quite good. The laser show is not recommended and in fact we left before it was over.

As others have mentioned, Custer State Park is a can't miss part of any trip to this area as well as the badlands and Mt Rushmore. The area is a great place to spend several days with a number of activities for all ages.
