Have you made it to Mesa Verde? It is so interesting. They have a few hook-ups in the Morefield Campground. I'm sure they would have availability at this time of year.

Today we saw the ancient Pueblo cave dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park. Very interesting! Tomorrow a.m. we head to Moab, Utah. So far the weather has been stellar for the whole trip. Any rain we have had came at night. Richard & Jill, we drove through Ouray but didn't stop as we had to get back to the campground. It is a very pretty little place!
I will try to post a picture in the morning when the internet is better.
We have been here at Durango KOA since last Thursday and have a reservation at the Moab KOA. All our trips around here have been day trips.

Did you go down to the bottom, or just view it from up on top?

We toured two of them - Balcony House and Cliff Palace. The picture I posted is of the latter. The tours are $4 per tour per person and it is park rangers who conduct them. They are very good value. The first one was a bit challenging with a couple of ladders and a low tunnel to crawl through. There was a bit of climbing on both tours, and combined with the altitude (7,000+ feet), that left us a bit drained. The place is well worth a visit!

Glad you took the tour. You're right, they are well worth it. I just wasn't sure if they were still doing them.

I guess! The rangers said there are many theories by many scientists but most believe that they wanted to keep the flat areas for growing crops. They had originally settled on the flat areas but moved to the cliffs later on. They climbed up and down the cliffs. The ladders and paths were added by the National Park Service for the benefit of tourists.

They took to the cliffs for the added shelter it provided, as well as being elevated it was much easier to see your enemy approaching and much easier to defend. The site would have originally had a series of ladders, which could be pulled up for security reasons.

I agree with what Tim stated.
I don't think they have ever figured out what happened to that race of people, or why they moved on.

I love Balcony House. I did get ill one time when we did it because I drank nothing but coffee before the trek. I became dehydrated because it was very hot. I'll never do that again!!

According to the rangers, the dwelling locations were not related to security. The descendents of these people are still around.
They also told us the people climbed up and down the cliffs using hand and toe holds. There is a sculpture at the visitor center depicting that:

Not doubting what you where told, but, history books and internet say otherwise. You would think the rangers know what they talking about. Not arguing one way are the other, but this is what I always understood.

I am particularly interested in where you stay when you get to AZ, UT, and CO. My plans right now call for a few weeks in NM, then on to AZ, up to UT and then to CO to see friends in Colorado Springs. I will be doing more research on how best to avoid the higher mountain peaks if possible when traveling through CO. I was in PA earlier this spring and on some back roads to a COE we hit 10-12% roads. No problem getting up them but the ride down has convinced me I need an exhaust brake. That will be getting added before I head west.
Travel well, travel safe,

I am reviewing some of the earlier posts and thought I would reply to this. There were two mountain passes along Highway 160 going from Colorado Springs to Durango. The second, Wolf Creek pass was pretty high. It sounds like you have a bigger truck than we have. Our truck whined a lot on the up grades but the guy at the RV dealer who did our repairs said that is normal due to the thin air at the altitudes. The rpms were high (4,000 - 5,000), but he said it would not hurt the truck. So she did the job. We gear down on the downgrades. I would not worry if I were you. We have regular trailer brakes.
As for campgrounds, we started out at Casey IL at a KOA and have stayed with that brand. We find them to be generally well run and clean. We made reservations for the next place we go. They can do that at the KOAs. Makes it easy. Right now we are at Moab KOA, Friday we head to Cannonville KOA (near Bryce Canyon) for four nights and then three nights at Cedar City (near Zion). After that, probably Grand Canyon.

Yesterday we visited Arches National Park and Dead Horse State park near Moab, Utah. The terrain is so much different here from anywhere else we have been! Here is a picture I took of Delicate Arch. It is perched high atop a hill so I zoomed in on it with my camera.

We are now in the Bryce Canyon area. We visited Bryce Canyon yesterday and took a lot of pictures. What a beautiful and interesting place! We hiked down into the canyon, a challenging 1.3 mile hike with over a 500' elevation change. I tried to upload some pictures but the internet kept cutting out. I will try again another time.
