Heading to Grand Lake CO in 2019

Hi Everyone, we're heading to Grand Lake CO in 2019 for an early summer vacation. I use to live out that way so I'm well aware of the challenging climbs and turns heading to Grand Lake. In my research it appears that going to Denver and taking I-70 to HWY 40 to HWY 34 will be the best option. My concern is if I'll be okay on the switchbacks with my length and if my Silverado 1500 will have enough to pull it at higher elevations. My Silverado is the 5.3L with a 3.42 gear ratio. I estimate my total length is around 60 feet.

I'd love to hear everyone's opinions. Also, any recommendations for a good GPS App for the iPhone would be great. Thanks!

Your zinger weights 7,734 Lbs dry and according to the towing specs on the 2017 1500 the towing is between 5,500-9,400 Lbs. Without weighing yours loaded; lets say your probably around 8,234(with 500Lbs of cargo)-8,534(with 800Lbs of cargo).Thats getting in the upper range. Adding steep inclines to that, I personally would say it would be difficult on the engine and transmission. 20 years ago I tried pulling a 28’ Jayco TT in the mountains of NC and had problems with the transmission slipping on a new 1500 4x4. Traded it in for a 2500HD 4x4 and it was a world of difference. I’ve never tried pulling anything again without a 2500 HD. Let’s see what others say. Just my opinion.

Towing Capacity

I would agree it will be hard on the truck. My towing capacity for my specific truck is 9,200 lbs.

I would have to say your gonna regret using that truck to pull such a heavy trailer in the mountains. Hitch weight with the trailer unloaded is at max and if you put anything in the storage under the front bed then your over hitch weight for sure. My trailer weighs 5318 unloaded and I am nervous about going to Colorado next year.

I wouldn't do it with a 1500 truck. I had a Dodge 1500 with the Hemi 5.7 Engine and I wouldn't take my Cruiser Aire 29 to Grand Lake. I live in Colorado and the roads to Grand Lake are excellent. They have widened Hwy. 40 over Berthoud Pass and the switch-backs would be no problem at all. They are almost 4 lanes wide. I know have a Dodge 2500 with a 6.7 Ltr. Diesel. I have no problem now going over the mountains.
