No Interstates!

After a taxing family funeral in Kansas, we wanted to avoid stress on the way back to South Carolina. We told the GPS "Avoid Freeways (Interstates)"

What a joy! We don't travel over 65 anyway, and we actually got home with 30 fewer miles! But no traffic jams, no irate drivers, just small towns, and peace and quiet. We took some US Highways, a lot of State highways, and even a few county highways. We got to see terrain and areas that most people never see! Get this! - We crossed the Mississippi River on a ferry from MO to KY! (I broke off the BBQ propane fixture under the rear bumper getting it on the ferry. I quickly shut off the tanks, and got a pipe cap in the town on the other side. Luckily, it was the low-hanging fixture, and not the black iron pipe itself. No problem!) We made no camping reservations on the return trip, and just started checking the Good Sam GPS for sites around 4pm. Sometimes had to veer off the route by 10 miles to get to one, but they were all great!

Good for you!

I too prefer the less traveled path when possible.

That’s awesome! Sorry about the fixture but sounds like the relaxed vibe made it less of an issue. Funny how when we slow down a little, minor issues stay just that...minor.

I do that all the time, but do not even own a GPS. Just look at a state or province map and go . Most small towns have a free or cheap town camp . Just did 7 days and no fees for camping . Gotta like it . And some are so close to town ,a little walk and there you are at ar reataurant.

Looking forward to retirement and how it used to be with no reservations when we first started, but given the enormous number of rv's they are selling now days.....
