Im traveling from Charlotte NC to Asheville NC this weekend. I am concerned about the how steep the grades are on I-40. My toad is a ford explorer xls v6 and im pulling 4900 lb. travel trailer. I have no problems going to the beach but not sure about the mountains yet. Is there some website i can go to to configure this or if you have any experience with this trip i would love to hear from you

As mountains go, the grades on I-40 from Charlotte to Asheville are not bad; I don't recall any really steep climbs, most are rather gradual. Having said that, it would probably be a good idea to check the manufacturer's towing specifications on your Explorer to determine hitch weight, payload, tow capacity, GVWR, etc. Also do you have a transmission cooler, brake controller, weight distributing hitch and anti-sway control? All factor into whether or not you can safely tow your camper in the mountains.

When I went to asheville from the raleigh area, we went through 1 steep grade (maybe 7%) near asheville, my old TV struggled going up w/ my TT. Not sure how a motorhome would handle. Use your gears going up and down.

Thanks M&M, Iappreciate the info, I have been trying to pull up the steep grades on Goodsam's and they are not showing any. So im a little scared!, dont want to get on the road and the grades are steep. I do have the towing package for 5850 lbs installed. However it came with the basic 3500 package. It does have transmission cooler, brake controller, weight distributing hitch and anti-sway control. I pull it to the beach most times at 60 mph. I may be ok. I think i will try it!!!

Thanks

Sounds like you are within limits on your towing capacity with a little to spare. Just take it easy, go a little slower, use a lower gear down steep hills and enjoy the scenery. Let us know how it goes after you get back home.
