What an Outing!
Just got back from my first (probably the only) outing for 2016. It was to a place I have been to for 5 years straight and love going to it. The event is the IMSA WeatherTech series races at Virginia International Raceway. Historically, it has not been a good trip for me as I usually end up with some minor injury, but not this year. However, it had other surprises for me and my 2 sons and 1 grandson.
Saturday, we hopped in my son's truck and rode down to another area of the track about a mile from our campsite to watch part of the Continental Tire series race. It started raining just after the start creating havoc for many of the racers. A thunderstorm quickly built up, and we headed back to the campers. When we got back to the top of the hill above our campsite, we could see our screen houses had been blown across the fence and were between the fence and the guard rail. Luckily, they got hung up on the fence and didn't make it to the track. (I wonder if they made the TV broadcast).
To keep this from getting too long, I'll continue with the trip home in the next post.

Continued...
Driving up I-85 on my way home, when it started getting dark and my headlights came on I looked in my mirrors to verify the marker lights were on. I didn't see them, so I decided to stop at the next rest stop to see what was up. When I exited the Interstate into the rest area my TPMS alarm went off for the right rear tire on the trailer. The pressure was down to 63 PSI. When I got out of the truck, I could hear air escaping from the tire. When I felt the tread, there was a leak along the inside edge of the tire.
I grabbed my wrench and loosened the lug nuts. A trucker pulled up behind me in the rest area and began working on his trailer. I asked him to watch for me as I pulled up on my Anderson leveler to raise the tire, but it wouldn't quite clear the pavement. The trucker grabbed a scissors jack from his truck and jacked up the tire. He removed the spare as I took the tire off. The tread had separated on the tire (I'll get photos tomorrow).
The trucker, Jeff from Greensboro, was great! He saved me a lot of work and probably a call to AAA. I was back on the road within 30 minutes.
I am so thankful I had not snapped the power cable in place causing it to back out enough that the lights were not connected because I would not have pulled into the rest area at just the right time.

Here is the tire. The distortion in the photo is not an optical illusion or distortion caused by the camera lens, it is the actual shape of the tire. The leak is in the area within the red oval.

Sounds like you had a very memorable trip/outing.
That is one butt ugly tire tho.
At least all ended well.

It's a Trail Express / Power Touring ST225/75/R15. It's a load range D tire.
It got about 250 miles added to the annual totals below from this trip.

If I was you I would upgrade to at least an E rated tire
The tires that the manufacture put on these trailers are marginal for the weight they carry. By upgrading sizes you build a safety margin into them

I've been considering a few upgrades, and this is probably the time to do them.
1. Heavier axles
2. Disc brakes
3. Shocks
4. Wet bolts
5. 16" wheels and LT tires
6. Maybe a new pin box

Here are some photos from the adventure. The thunderstorm wreaked havoc on our campsite and those of many others. These photos are of our campsite. The first photo shows the canopy that had been shading our generators. There were 3 canopies tied together covering the tables in the second photo. The 3 canopies ended up across the fence between the fence and the guard rail. If they had not gotten tangle up on the fence, they would have blown across the track between turns 15 and 16.

Wow, talk about a number of lucky and fortunate events happening at once! That tire is very distorted, separation inside the layers of the tire?
I love VIR. Beautiful area and the track is awesome. Been a while since I was there, but its always a good time.

The competitors had it rough on Saturday too. Here are some photos from the Continental Tire Series race.

A little bit of rain, flat tire and you complain. Get over it. No Kemp, just kidding. Must have been a week you'll never forget. I think I would go with changing to LT tires first. That way, you know you're most likely safe from another tire problem. If you're sure that your axles are underweight, then change them out. Good luck with your projects and will see you in October.
