Hi everyone. I need some advice. We are looking to buy the 29BH. We like the floorplan and love the weight! Can anyone tell me if the Chrysler Aspen 5.7 liter (119 inch wheelbase) would be a good tow vehicle with regards to the wheelbase? I know it has enough power but am concerned about the 30 ft trailer length.
It would be better financially if the family could use the Aspen for towing as well as everyday use instead of keeping the Town & Country minivan and having to buy a separate tow vehicle. My wife is sick of the minivan anyway and really likes the Aspen. I've been pushing for a Suburban but I really doubt she can/will want to drive something that size.

If you check out trailerlife.com towing guide you will find you either have a 7200# or 8200# tow rating (depending on axle ratio). The 29BH at 7450# is over the lower and does not leave much room on the other. You need to get as much info on your Aspen, then crunch the numbers. That is a lot of weight for that vehicle IMHO

I think the Slingshot 29BH is listed at 4100 lbs. The placard shows my 2011 29BH as 4196 lbs. My quad cab Dakota (which admittedly has a somewhat longer wheelbase than your Aspen) won't win any speed contests, but tows it with no problem.

The one I saw in person was factory weighed at 4180 lbs. There will be a little bit more added to that by the dealer, but not a bunch. With the Hemi, you're not even close to the limit, even if you have the standard gears in back.
As long as you don't put 3,000 lbs of gear and/or people in the trailer and vehicle.

I pulled our first Zinger with a Durango it did well had to get the right hitch set up the first one lead to several interesting situations Ended up getting the propride what a difference a month later Janet blackmailed into getting a truck withj the Cumin's in it thus that lead to the fifth wheel ahhh ladies and their methods

GVWR on spec page shows 7450, you do not want to go by the empty weight, although some may not have a lot of items in the unit, by the time you add water, holding tanks, grilles, linens, dishes, food, and all the other items we stuff into cubby holes, you will be close to the limit.

Found the specs on my old Durango, it was four wheel drive and had the Hemi had a 8800 llb towing cap. also had the towing package

I pull a 30ft Cruiser with a :Lincoln Navigator which has a 118" wheel base and I dont have any problems at all.

We have a 2011 SlingShot 29BH and tow it with a 2000 Xterra 3.3L. The wheelbase is listed at around 104".
Admittedly, I've only towed it three times so far (we bought it last month), and the longest distance was about 50 miles. The Xterra tows pretty well, but I'd opt for a larger more powerful TV for trips longer than 300 miles and forextended mountain-road hauling. I plan to replace it ina year or twowith something more suitable.

Like Frank said (fhenn), I also towed with a Durango hemi. Was fine everywhere but kinda slow up the Colorado mountain passes. As you see in my sig I upgraded to a half-ton, but my trailer is longer and heavier than what you're dealing with. I don't think you'll have a problem with the properly optioned Aspen. We're pulling the 29BH with a 2011 Grand Cherokee Hemi 5.7, 115 wheelbase, with tow package (7200# TC). No issues so far. Have more miles on it behind 2003 EXP at 119 wheelbase. No issues there either.
As noted earlier, we don't load up with 3000# of gear.

Okay Happy Trails I have some field test results for you:
We picked up our 2012 29BH last weekend. Aside from the first trip, losing a water pump in the Durango an hour from the dealer, things are going well.
I think you'll be okay with the vehicle you have. I towed yesterday in gusty winds and the ride was stable enough for my taste. Never a moment of worry, even with the occasional passing semi. So, with respect to the wheelbase, I think you'll be okay. Also, I'm using the equalizer 6000 lb hitch which I had set up by the dealer.
One thing you should know is that the sticker weight of the trailer is 4,550, not the 4,180 in the brochure. This is the result of the new design, I do believe. So figure that into your weight calculations.
So far, we're very pleased with our purchase.

I'm pulling a 29bh with a Nissan Exterra 4.0. It has a 6,000# towing cap but it tows it without any problems and we live in Pa with a lot of mountians. I just don't run with the tanks full to hold down the weight.

We pull a 2012 29bh with a V8 4Runner and a ProPride hitch. Last summer we took it through the BC rockies and it handled beautifully. Not the fastest up the hills, mind you, but I figured we had the same power to weight ratio as the average motorhome. We passed some, some passed us.
I highly recommend the 3P hitch for a shorter wheelbase vehicle. I have a Sherline tongue weight scale and run about 600 lbs with a full fresh water tank (which is at the back, so balances the extra weight of the 3P). When you're pushing the limits you really need to know your GVWR, your tow vehicle payload, your GCVWR, tongue weight, etc. For us, the 3P hitch made the whole setup possible.
BTW our bh shipped at 4678 lbs (if memory serves). As of 2012 the roof is heavier and there were a few other changes to improve quality, at the expense of some weight.
