Furnace & Heat Pump Together?

My 2015 Rushmore Springfield's thermostat will sometimes turn on both the gas furnace and the heat pump when I select "Elect Heat", and sometimes only the heat pump will come on - as it seems to me it should work.

I'm thinking it's a problem with the contacts in the thermostat unless somehow this is a feature.

Anyone observe this behavior?

When set on heatpump it will run until outside temp drops to about 40 degrees then the furnace will kick in and the heatpump will run for a while before shutting down.

If you set the thermostat 5 degrees or more above the room temperature both will run until it reaches the set temp then the hp will take over. To prevent that problem set the thermostat up only 2-3 degrees at a time to only run the hp.

Thanks for the explanation. Given our symptoms, that makes perfect sense.

Huh....that is weird....my Springfield only runs the heat pump when electric is selected. I have found that the heat pump is good down to just below 40-degrees before I start to lose the trailer without supplementing with either the fireplace or electric heaters.
When was your springfield built?? Mine was an early 2015....

As in your case, my heat pump only runs when "electric" is selected; however, if I ask for a 5 or more degree increase in temp, then the gas furnace comes on automatically to augment the heat pump.

FYI: My Springfield was built in August 2014.

Mine was end of July in 2014...guess I have never asked for more then 5-degrees, most of the time I just use the heat pump at night with supplement electric...
