Hi, new to the forum and just bought first fifth wheel, the new washington model and am picking it up in a couple weeks. My question is : What are your opinions on the slide out awnings over the pop outs? Heard they vibrate a lot and people have to put straps around them to keep them from flapping in the wind. We are going to be living in this trailer pry 8 month plus out of the year so just want to know if they are a good decision to have or more hassle then they are worth?

More info? Toppers on the slide-outs? Vibrate..., while out? ..., in the wind? Straps..., while moving down the road? I put toppers on my slides, have no problems, keeps debris off the tops, just haveconfigured a triangle shaped contraption of pvc pipe and joints to push under the dining rm / lvng rm topper to help shed the rain.

Congrats on the new 5er,and welcome to the forum, hope y'allenjoy happy campingEdited by: Ruck

Yeah slide out covers. Someone told me they have seen people put straps on them because they are loud in the wind.

We have had them would not be with out them, the noise has not bothered us some people put swim noodle under them or a beach ball. I would wait until you have been out a couple of times to see how it goes

I use a boat fender with a length of rope tied to each end to put between slide top and awning to shed rain water.... makes it easy to put in and take out ...

Benefits of slide out
awnings.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /></span>

1: Stops water from pooling
on top of slide roof and dumping inside</span>

2: stops leafs and debris
from gather on top of slide out</span>

3: no need to sweep off
slide out prior to retracting</span>

4: keeps slide out cooler
by blocking direct sun</span>

Disadvantages:</span>

1: rain pools on top on
large slide out awning. (*retract slide out 1/2 way and water dumps OUTSIDE- extend)</span>

2:
windy days may flap (also may flap if water is pooled on top)
3: Additional cost and possiblereplacement of awning material</span>
Hot climate: they are a must have.

A lot of problems with leaks with the schwintek slide system. Water runs along the track into the coach, especially when not quite level. Apparently slide toppers help minimize water rinning down the sides of the slide preventing the leak.

I guess if it is leaking it is Schwintek. Mine hasn't leaked yet so I guess I have the better brand.

I think on that slide if you see metal mounted on the side of the slide that means you have the schwintek

We have toppers on all of our slides. We have owned 3 fifth wheels and put them on all of them - protects the top of the slide and have never had any water leak in on the top. They do get noisy when the wind blows - will try a few noise reduction options this year.
</span>
We have the</span>SCHWINTEKslide system on out bed slide - toppers does help. We have not had any leaks that we have seen along the gear rails. I am going to re-seal the top of the gear rail in the spring - all were replaced last fall when the RV dealer replaced the slide system. The replacement seems to be sealed and attached better than the original installation.</span>
