I found a decent deal on an 08 F-250 with a 6.8L V-10 gas engine. Have done some internet research but wonder what some of you Ford guys think of that particular engine. It has 110,000 miles. Thanks in advance.

I had a mini home with a v10. First one that came out in RVs.
It was a power house, but the gas mileage---not so good.

When I was looking at trucks back in '08, I test drove the Ford V-10. Truck was really built solid but rode too hard for me. The V-10 will pull a large house but the mileage was a deal breaker...8-10 towing or not.

My Bucket Truck at work is a V-10 and Lloyd is on the money...Power all day long, but 5.9 MPG just as long.(F-450 W/ a 35'Boom and Truck Box on the back). Scale wt. about 9200Lb.

The V10 is a solid engine. If it has been taken care of, you should do well for a gas engine. I would look into perhaps a few upgrades to help with the mileage....perhaps cold air induction, exhaust upgrades, an engine tuner that would upgrade your tranny spec, performance spark plugs, updated fuel filter, etc. You can even check out tires and suspension that could help out as well. You have a good base truck that should last you a bit. I would try to find a good performance shop if you don't do the upgrades yourself...stay the heck away from dealer shops!

#1 on any Ford V10 change the plugs!!
If they are originial it is going to be real tuff. WARNING do not break one off!!
Get some(lots) carbon remover, spray every plug twice or more a day for several days. Then: lightly tighten 1/10 -1/8 turn; Spray heavily w/ carbon remover; Now try turning plug backout & tighten & backout repeatedly; Do not use any amount of force; Repeat; Repeat until plug will turn all the way out . . . Do NOT break plug off, broken plug requires pulling head(s.)
Most V-10s on the road are only V-7s. Fords original plugs were / are 'crap!'

If I remember correctly, some 2003s had the 7.3 as well as the 6.0. That was the final year of the 7.3 though, as stated earlier. I owned a 2006 F250 6.0 for 5 years. It was a great truck. Had to put a new FICM ($1,000 fuel injector control module) in it and I had to replace all 8 injectors but that was it. The injectors in the 6.0 diesel are notorious for going out, especially if you have a habit of running it low on fuel. I eventually learned how to change them myself and started working on 6.0s for other people on the side. I bought the scanning software for my laptop and all of the tools needed for that particular engine. You can bullet proof those engines by changing the head bolts out with head studs, deleting the EGR cooler or welding both ends shut, and being religious when it comes to oil/fuel filter changes. I loved my 6.0. Almost regret trading it in.

One thing I remember about a couple of our work trucks with V-10 s was that a spark plug blew completely out of the head. Anyone else remember this? Seems like some 5.4's had this problem as well.

I appreciate everyone's input. I stopped by dealer tonight after work to at least see it as I have only seen it on the internet. Of course they were closed. Truck seems to be very clean. Interior only seen thru the window. Truck is certified by dealer and comes with a 150,000 2yr 100% parts and labor warranty minus a $200 deductible. As it has 111,000 that is 39,000 miles under warranty on full drivetrain. I plan to send an email to the internet sales guy and maybe go see him in person this weekend if weather holds out, otherwise will be next Thur. A few pics are included.

By the looks of the pictures, I can see why that truck caught your attention.
It's sharp!

Beware of to good to be true deals, A good friend saw clean 2009 F250 and couldn't pass it up be cause of the great looking rims and tires and super clean interior. One month later engine blows and he finds out the truck was used in ND oil fields and the owner switch out the seats and removed the box and instrument cluster after putting on over 200,000 miles. The owner puts back the original seats, box and instrument cluster that showed 80,000 miles, Dealer was taken and this young man and now are trying to work something out. The moral of the story is have the truck checked out under hood and look at suspension, ball joints, and oil leaks. Just saying.

It is a beautiful truck. I hope to make arrangements to check it out tomorrow. I have been wanting to upgrade but certainly not in the market for a new truck. I have looked at a few diesel trucks and they don't last long. Not really excited about a diesel with the maintenance and all. It would not be a daily driver. Just looking for something that will serve the purpose and carry me thru the next several years. More to follow.

AS an ASE Master tech & Ford Diesel Tech, I know for a fact that the 7.3 IDIT & the 7.3 Power stroke are the best engines that were ever produced. With proper care & maint, these engines will last well over 500.000 mi. The manual ZF trans is also very strong & the automatic can be beefed up with some modifications (billet torque converter). 2003 was the last year for the 7.3 ending mid-year with the 6.0. Just make sure that the truck it self has not been some mud bucket work horse.

not a 6.4

Thanks Lloyd. I appreciate everyone's input, but would like comments specific to this model. I did inspect and drive today. I was surprised at how much bigger it seemed. lol. Handled well. Seemed to have plenty of power. Surprised at how quiet it was. Very clean and comes with a powertrain warranty good at any ASE certified shop. Little low on my trade but manager was out today for a medical procedure. We get a little closer on numbers I am thinking I will do it.

Tim I have a 2008 CC 4WD 6.8l. it's been a good boat and 5th wheel TV. It has little over 80,000 miles and has two problems that we be fixed soon. One exhaust manifold leak and a noisy wheeling bearing which I found out today the OEM part is $650 each. Its still a good TV and fun to drive.
