Brake Gain Adjust

I'm a little confused when hooking up my fiver to my TV should the gain be adjusted in a particular way? I always thought max gain.

What I was told was to pull the trailer at 20-25mph and depress the controller & adjust gain til trailer will smoothly stop the tv without touching the brake. If you have to set the gain to max then either you have a voltage problem or trailer brakes need repaired/replaced.

Thanks, I usually set gain to max, simply because I didn't know any better.

That will wear through your trailer brakes faster.

The instructions for my pickup's built-in brake controller state that when going 20-25 kilometers per hour adjust the brake gain until the trailer brakes lock and then back off one unit of measurement (I think mine go from 1-8). For a large trailer the instructions are that if you can't get the trailer brakes to lock set the gain to max.

Mine said the same thing....my question is can you tell then they lock right away? I really don't want to flat spot my tires.

What about when it is wet? Should be be backing off our gain? Really waiting for the day when affordable anti lock brakes make it to trailers. I know there are a couple systems out there now.

I really don't want mine set that high. I have mine set at 5. All I want is to feel the trailer start pulling back on the truck some when I step on the brakes.

I set my gain to 6.0. I would be very concerned about setting max in an emergency stop, loosing traction in the process. Then if wet, you'd see that trailer passing you in a panc stop. Not a good thing!

Thanks for the information, I made the corrections. It's why I asked the question.

Send a message via Yahoo to Bowler304
I keep mine at 5.5 in my F150 and it works great, I get a slight push when I hit the brakes and then the trailers slows the truck gently. I started out on 4.0 and mine goes to 10 but was told you just want it to slow the truck when pressed not stop it.

With the old timed controllers I could see that, but with the inertial ones wouldn't you want max available braking since it won't apply it until you do?

Mine is inertial and even though it's set for 4-5 it only brakes at about a 3 max most of the time since I drive like an old man.

But if I did stomp on the brakes I'm not sure I would want the trailer pushing me (or fish tailing around me), but I don't want wheel lockup either.

Which brings back the wet pavement situation. If it's wet, my inertia won't be as strong since the pavement is wet, meaning the inertial controller wouldn't ever send max braking either? So I shouldn't have to worry about resetting the max when it is wet?

When I pulled my 250rb in yesterday I noticed that I'd set the gain on my Chevy in dash controller to 4.0
