Here it is.....

This is the 2012 Ford F350 diesel SRD King Ranch I purchased. Going in Tuesday for the Ford 5th wheel prep, (the under bed pucks, not the additional wiring harness). Truck already has camper and tow package from factory.

Another vote for the F350! These are made to haul tough. Just recently helped a buddy install the new fender flares and backrack headache racks for kayak mount on his 2004 F350. It has been hauling their 41' toy hauler without major issues.

That actually turned out to be a bonus more then a hindrance I thought it was going to be. Driving solo I'd rather have the 44 but with 4 bladders the 26 gallons worked out well and kept us all more fresh.

Any of the big 3 3/4 tons' would do the job well, and anyone of them can be a lemon, but you'll be happy with the Ford. Enjoy the ride!
Still worth considering the upgrade to the Titan 50 gallon tank. I love mine. I still stop every two to three hours for a break but I can tow 550 miles without a fill up. Unhook at the end of the day and go fuel wherever I want

Last week I had the factory 5th wheel and goose neck prep package installed. Ordered the package from fordaccessories.com . The price was the same as what the dealer quoted me. The installation was much cheaper. I was quoted $300-$400 by the dealer. The fordaccessories.com website had a check to pay for installation which varied by dealer. It cost me $208. The dealer kept asking me if I was quoted a cost for installation. I kept telling them it was already paid. What should have been a 2 hour job, (left the truck all day), ended up taking 3 days. Shame on them. I didn't buy the truck there, but they lost a new customer.

My first diesel was a 2011 ford f-250, 6.7 powerstroke. Fell in love with the power, both empty or pulling our fifth wheel. Got 18 plus empty and 12 towing, compared to 6.7 mpg with 6.0 gmc gas motor. After 4 yrs, traded for same truck, a 2016. More power and a little less fuel milage, but pulls hills like a dream. Set at about 63 mph cruise control, and forget it, and the 2016 has an engine brake...... nice

My manual says I have engine braking in the 2012, but it doesn't have a seperate toggle or switch like I've seen in my buddy's RAM. I can feel the exhaust brake going down hills when in cruise control empty or when I used the foot brake going down hill. At least I thought I did. Unlike other vehicles I have had with cruise control, this truck will try to slow itself down going down hill. The only other time I had that happen was in my Volvo with interactive cruise which would maintain speed at all times.

Definitely a popcorn and beer thread but it's all a personal opinion.
We had a 2011 F-350 DW Diesel and wanted to upgrade in 2015 and we couldn't decide between Ford or Dodge so we purchased a GMC. Problem solved and we love it.

For the independent comparison - watch Mr Trucks " Ike Gauntlet" challange on utube. You will see all three compared with the same loads and hill challenge. Just pick your year and draw your own conclusions.

Hi Sean,

I bought a 2017 Diesel Dually in Dec. Very happy with it. I am interested in getting the under bed 5th wheel set up, but our local truck accessories guy told me the aftermarket one isn't available yet for the 17's. I went to the Ford site and they do have it there. Where did you get the adapter (looks like a Reese) for yours? I have a Husky...

Congrats on the new truck. I bought the under bed set up on Fordaccessories.com. It allowed me to include installation and pick a local dealer. Caused a bit of a rucus there because I think they thought they could charge more.

I got my adapter on Amazon. It's a Reese generic adapter. Was less expensive than the ford version and shipped free with Prime. I'm using it with a Reese hitch but it says it will work with any hitch. According to Amazon it will fit a 2017 F350. I'm using a friends hitch right now. With the extra height I can't close my tonneau, (it's a metal rolling Retrax), without taking the head off the hitch. If I end up having to buy a hitch, I'm going to buy one that drops right into the pucks.

Thanks Sean,

Looks like that's the way I'll go too. I have a Husky 16K hitch. One concern I have is a few posts in another forum from guys who have bought the new 17's and the higher siderails (than the 16 and below) have been an issue. I wonder if the 2 additional inches will help with that....

Congrats on the ‘12 F350. I recently traded my ‘12 F250 on a brand new ‘16 F350 FX4. Both were 6.7’s 4x4 SRW rigs.

The 11’s to 14’s 6.7’s have engine braking only ....similar to a gasser plus dropping gears if bad enough.

The 15’s plus 6.7’s have an functional exhaust brake PLUS the engine and tranny braking of the previous years. The button is below the 4x4 knob.

The upgraded turbo in the 15 plus is the main reason for the difference.

That is a good question. Another benefit to having the adapter frame vs. a frame that fits into the pucks is you are not tied to a truck specific hitch. The puck system was a brilliant move on the part of hitch manufacturers because the adapters are specific to each brand of truck. My Ford frame is much smaller than my buddies Ram adapter.

Attached are pictures of my Reese adapter frame on top of or next to my buddies RAM factory adapter frame. There is a considerable difference in size. The RAM is much larger overall, however the hitch itself fits just fine.

So Ford finally got my underbed 5th wheel set up sent to my local dealer for me. I made my appointment for this morning to get it installed. I did the same as Sean and paid for installation ($100) through the Fordparts website. I got a phone call an hour later. "How much do you intend to pay for the installation?" I explained it was already paid for. I got a sigh at the other end of the phone line. I am assuming the dealers are not thrilled with Ford only giving them $100 to install this!
