Hello & Happy New Year to all!

This is my 1st post on this fantastic & informative forum. Picking up our 2012 Sunset Trail Travel Trailer ST25RBon Feb 3rd, and not sure which Equilizer hitch to purchase.

Trailer details:

Dry Weight 5,049 lbs

Tongue Weight: 560 lbs

GVWR: 7,560 LBS

Carrying Capacity: 2,274 lbs

Axle Weight: 4,489 lbs

My question: Equilizer hitch available in 600 lbs/6,000 lbs (tongue/towing capacity max) as well as 1,000 lbs/10,000lbs maxweight ratings.

I'm not sure the 600/6,000 lb unit may be enough. If I load up trailer with water, gear, etc.

I may be getting very close if not over the 6,000 lb rating. Is it unsafe to go slightly over by say few hundred lbs? The next larger hitch may be overkill, and was told may result in a "stiffer" ride, being it is rated for up to a 10,000 lb trailer and up to a 1000 lb tongue wait. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I need to order proper size unit before Feb 3rd's pick up date.

Hello and welcome. Congrats on your new TT. I would go with the larger bars since the 560 lb tongue weight is a dry weight and will only get heavier from there but I am still new to this. To give you an idea, I have the reese dual cam. My TT has a 810 lb dry tongue weight. I have 1200 lb bars instead of 1000 lb bars. Hope that helps you some.

Thanks for the info. That is kinda the direction I was leaning toward.560 lb tongue weight like you said is "dry" weight. Couple ofitems, bbq, etc.in back of truck or trailer will soon bring it up and possibly over the 600 lb mark. Add to that 40 gallons of water (not that I fill fresh water tank while driving) holding tanks, plus camping gear won't be long before I'm at max (and beyond). Happy travels!

There's a motto out here in the Colorado mountains pertaining to hiking and climbing in said mountains.."When in doubt, go higher". I applied that to my Equal-I-Zer and opted for the higher rating. In my opinion, there's not much more important than safe towing capabilities.

You want the 10000# hitch. Just loading your trailer will over load the 6000# hitch.

Hi and welcome I'm with the others and I'm also new to this site but not to RV.ing. I have a 2012 CT29RLX with the 10'000 bars Equalizer and a dry weight of 7041 .I used the same setup on my last tt and I've found that a little trying with defrent settings you will get it set up great . I have allways used Reese but found them to be too loud with the chains pooping when backing & turning .{ Hint !!} read the book that comes with the Equaliser close they tell just how to make tiny adj. that will make you happy .
