F150 EcoBoost

Guys...I must say...I have seen alot of questions about TV's and many end up in discussion over various F150 Eco's. A bit off topic...

That being said, I started this thread dedicated to the F150 EcoBoost.

I am a die-hard Chevy guy...but Ford's EcoBoost has my attention. I am soaking the info up like a sponge. Please fire away with TV/Trailer combo, tips, MPG, tire switches, etc. Especially you, Mark5W...quite the 5th wheel for a 1/2 ton.

I am certain I am not the only one very interested in real world experience!

Have only towed my trailer home from the dealer with my F150 EB, so don't have a lot to say about towing as of yet. But fingers crossed we will be making our maiden voyage for the season next week.

If you have any questions about daily driving fire away

If some one is asking about TV and and just because the Eco-Boost enters into the discussion, I can't see where that is off topic.

As a new eco-boost owner, I will be watching this thread with interest as well. Just turned 400 miles on it, but have a camping trip planned for the end of April. Should easily have the 1000 mile break-in before towing mileage by then. I did a lot of research before buying and so far am very pleased with my F150 eco-boost. I was all set to buy a Tundra as I like Toyota, but no regrets on the Ford F150 so far.

Thumbs up

Before I give you info on my truck and rv setup here are some facts.
Although early half-ton pickups could carry max loads of 1000 pounds (453.5 kg), since at least the 1960s, new and improved half-ton pickups have been able to safely carry more, surpassing their namesakes.
But old habits die hard, and the name "half-ton" has stuck around to this day. It's still helpful as a general classification term, differentiating the group from the larger, heavy-duty three-quarter-ton pickups and one-ton pickups (also obsolete terms). 1/2 truck is a misnomer.

So when someone tells me you only got a 1/2 ton truck it just shows their ignorance of the facts.

My truck and Rv:

1) 2013 Ford XLT SCREW
2) 3.5 V-6 Twin Turbo Ecoboost engine
3) Maximum Tow pkg.
4) Heavy Duty Payload pkg.
i) 17" High Capacity 7 lug aluminum rim
ii) Heavy Duty Shock absorbers
iii) 9.75 inch gear set
iv) Upgraded springs, radiator, and auxiliary transmission oil cooler
v) 3.73 limited slip axle
vi) LT245/75R17E BSW a/t tires

5) Max GVWR: 8200
6) Max payload: 2310
7) GCWR: 17,100
8) Aftermarket: Roadmaster Active Suspension, waiting to install: EBC Greenstuff brake pads
9) 20 - 22 mpg on road
10) 10- 12 towing
11) 2013 Cruiser Patriot 335SS
12) Weight with gas, our STUFF: 10,600

I now have 11,569 miles on truck. Rides great towing and non-towing.

Hope this helps.
Any other questions, please pm me.

To start, essentially same truck as Mark5w, except I have 3.55 gears. Upgraded with airlift kit on back and 17" 10 ply HD truck tires last month.

Last summer..Towed my 300BH Ohio to Yellowstone and back. No issues. 6275# dry, at least a 1,000lbs of "stuff", bed was packed to the top also.. and 5 people..all adult size. I scare easily towing and I always felt in control with the exception of one windstorm we had in MN..but that was a freak thing..actually saw a brand new Ram 1500 and Jayco trailer flipped on the other side of the highway..really high winds.that afternoon.

Truck pulled hard when I needed it in the mountainous areas. MPGs were so-so..10.5 i think was my average total trip. I was way under my max weight-wise, but felt soft when the airlift kit was at around 40psi....figured it was my stock tires stressing.

Hope to remedy that with 10plys. Will see in a few weeks if that helps.

towed later in the summer to Gettysburg..way more stress on the truck driving through PA..still pulled well. 6 passengers and a dog. still alot of stuff for a 3 day weekend. no issues.

Power curve reminds me of how diesels drive. lots of low end power, but dont go drag racing with it..those turbos need some time to spin up. Also, you pay dearly when you thump on the gas pedal..

Its a 2011, bought it new in April 2012. Have close to 45K on it. Love it. If i was towing anything more, I'd upgrade to 3/4 ton.

Still can't believe Mark5w is pulling a fifth-wheel with essentially the same truck. I fight butt-sag when we get to loaded up front. I have a ProPride hitch it adds considerable weight. The Airlift kit helps, but I use a tongue scale to keep us honest on weight. Amazing what shifting stuff out of the bedroom and the front storage can do for tongue weight.

Since you brought it up. Do you have your scale weights for the TV and trailer ready to go?

The empty 335 (shipping weight 9741) shows a hitch weight of 1980. Which figures to 20%. Times your weight of 10,600 (sounds light to me) equals 2120 hitch. That doesn't leave much for the hitch, fuel, passengers, etc. against your 2310 payload.

If you have your scale weights I would be interested as my trailer is smaller than yours and while I'm within specs on GVWR it's just barely. Maybe it's because your TV doesn't weigh 8,000 lbs.

That is very true but nowhere does any "boost" owners post any actual weights. That's what I'm curious about.

Off topic in that the threads about a TV question turns into EcoBoost equipment comparisons...

I was aware there are other threads with much information. Just trying to help condense some of it for people who are interested.

Regardless of make or model (F150-agnostic), I found a great tool at this site to calculate "How heavy a travel trailer can I tow?" -->

http://changingears.com/rv-sec-calc-...ml?truck_gvwr=

It helps you calculate down to the axle what a vehicle can tow. You still need to do the leg work pulling truck data and actually go to a weigh station..but it has inputs and notes along the way to remind you what to include.

It really opened my eyes to how the weight really adds up. I've talked to one to many people that either had to sell their TT right after buying or upgrade their TV because they bought "too much trailer".

We ended up downsizing from our original pick of the 32BH to a 300BH. Very similar units, but the 300BH is a bit shorter and drops around 800LBS. You basically lose the walk in bath.

It's a bit false advertising on the part of Crossroads and all the other manufacturers to list some of these TT's as "half ton towable"

Yes, if your pulling dry weight, no propane, food, clothes, dogs passengers, horsehoes, bottle jacks, etc and you have a single cab with HD towing package with 3.73s and e-rated tires...

My only gripe is the average joe/jill buying a TT that sleeps 10 people..of course he/she is going to have literally a ton of "stuff" and truckload of kids, bikes, dogs...just my two cents.

We walked away from at least 2 deals because the dealer said we could tow with no problem, than did the math on our own.

I've never seen 3.75 gears from any manufacturer. I believe you probably have a 3.73 gear (11 teeth on the pinion and 41 on the ring).

Love the feedback guys. Also, anyone check out Ford's website?

Ford has done an awesome job on their site showing payload/towing/package breakdowns...both for the F150 and Super Duty. You can look at a glance at their total offering and what the ratings are for various combinations. You can look and know exactly what combination you need with what engine to get a specific rating and payload.

I don't have a Ford but one thing that I have learned is you need to pay attention to the Rear GAWR. I had a Ram 1500, Hemi when I first purchased my SF32RL 5er. I was only concerned with the published towing capacity at that time. The Hemi had the power to pull but the 1500 rear GAWR is 3,900 lbs. With the loaded 5th wheel attached I was at 4,920 lbs! That is 1,000 lbs or 26% over GAWR. I wouldn't think that a F150 would be much different. How can you feel safe when you are 26% over your rated GAWR? I don't think upgrading your tires would increase your GAWR although it will improve your stability. I upgraded to a 2500 Diesel for peace of mind. I don't think my 2500 is overkill.

Cliff you can quit or doing anything else you want to. You asked for specs/ figures and that was what I was pointing out to you, because you apparently didn't/couldn't find them. Whether they were right or wrong for your criteria I haven't a clue. Just giving you the link.

These calculators are nice, but they do tend to assume everyone travels at max gross weight on everything, and that simply is not true. only real number from a scale will tell you if you are towing within limits. Just because my trailer can hold 9592lbs, does not mean thats how I tow it. Real numbers are closer to 7200 when loaded. It was fun to play with the numbers in the calculator and manipulate certain values to see wich ones allow me to haul more or less trailer.

cw3Jason,

Not quite following you here...I looked at about 1/2 dozen different calculators and the reason I shared this one is because it does take into account your actual weights and calculates the diff. Let me know if the link I posted is different.
