F250 6.2L Gasser

Anyone with experience on the 6.2L Gas. How would it compare to an identical F-250 with the diesel? Keep in mind this would not be a daily driver and as I still have a ways to go before retirement would not see a lot of high mileage trips.

Being a diesel fan, I really push for that mode of transportation, but....
the 6.2 is similar to the 5.4L I just traded for the 6.7 PSD. The biggest comparison I have is the pulling power. YOur 6.2 has a good rep and I would not doubt it has done well by you. The biggest diff is in the mpg and power availability. I found the 5.4 got around 13.5 around town, and 21mpg over the road. My 6.7 does around 15.5 mpg and 19.5 unloaded. However, my 5.4 got only 9.9mpg pulling TT, and the 6.7PSD is getting around 13mpg pulling 7800# 5th wheel. My truck is also my primary work vehicle, so it does get driven.
Diesel is more expensive, so it would depend on the cost to mpg ratio. I choose diesel for longevity and pull power.
I like the 6.7 and after having it available, I would not go back to a gasser to pull a TT or 5er. Some here can probably give you more info on the advantages of the gas, so keep checking back for responses.

I don't own it, just looking at it. It had some impressive numbers as far as weight and towing capacity. I agree that the diesel would be probably be better but like I said, would not be a daily driver or see a lot of high mileage trips right now.

If that's the case Tim, getting the diesel now might be the best choice. The difference in fuel cost is the only concern. Plus you'll have the grunt for the 40 footer you buy in the future.

The trade off is higher cost. If you don't put the miles on it, you won't gain anything with the diesel except future towing power. You can put a lot of gas into your truck for a $6k to $8k difference in price. I put over 30,000 miles per year on my truck so diesel is the only way to go or you would be changing oil every 5 to 6 weeks.

Higher maintenance cost is NOT the issue with a diesel, it's the higher initial cost. My diesel has the same maintenance cost as previous gas trucks, I change oil half as often and it costs twice as much. I replace my fuel filters twice yearly ($200 total). Up until this winter, diesel was cheaper than gasoline so I was ahead on that.

If you don't need the tow power or put on some serious miles, it will take a long time to offset the cost. You would likely be tempted to change out the truck before you have even used it up.

I change my trucks every 4 to 5 years after putting on about 160,000 miles (250,000 km). They are still worth some money at that point since it is a relatively new model still. I bought my 2005 in 2007 and sold it in 2012. I bought my 2011 in 2012 and I will likely sell it in 2016 and buy a 2015 or 2016 depending on model year differences.

To each their own and this is just my opinion but I feel unless you are going to put the miles on it you are better off with a newer gas truck. Now if you really want the better economy, try to find a great low mileage diesel that is several years old with a great history.

I'm on my iPhone - I think I just strained my thumb.

I had a 2014 gas crew cab rented for a week and empty it had unimpressive day to day fuel economy. It was struggling to get 14MPG no matter how easy I drove. I pulled my trailer about 50KM and it averaged around 10MPG. I don't use the computer to calculate the milage I use the odometer and total to fill it back up.

In my area they are nearly $10,000 less expensive than the diesel both new and used.

The motor is a beauty, the truck is a tank and is very big. I know some will complain that my issue is with fuel economy on an 8000lb truck but it really should be able to do better than the 25 year old 454 chevy dually we have in our work fleet.

For me, the rental week answered my questions at this size the diesel is just a better platform day to day and when towing.

I figured the mpg would suck. Thanks for the info.
