New Truck Time

Wife just asked me when I was going to get the new truck....HUH? We have been talking about it off and on since last fall but apparently she must have been thinking of it more than me...A good thing I guess. Being the planner she is, she knows that one should have at least 1000 miles on a new truck prior to any towing (according to Ford). And our trip to Glacier is rapidly approaching.
I am leaning heavily towards going back to a Ford and getting an ecoboost for our little ST22BH. But before I do, I think I will borrow one from a friend and give it a test tow.

Fwiw I've never "broken in" any car or truck I've ever owned. In my opinion products should be ready to go when they arrive at the lot. I've never had any issues related to not following the process.

Your going to love the torque of the ecoboost engine.

Get the ecoboost HD. It should do just fine with your tt. Mark on here uses it to tow his cruiser 5er without any issues. Chevy recommended a 500 mile break in for mine before towing and then taking it easy the first 500 miles of towing. It was tough keeping the truck below 50 for the first 500 miles but the dealership helped me out knowing I was towing a week after purchasing. They had to get the truck from another dealership so they drove it down instead of towing it giving me 245 miles on the truck. They then added that 245 miles on to my warranty so it was like starting at zero. I would follow the owners manual for whatever truck you buy so they don't find a reason to void the warranty on your new vehicle.

Towed our 300BH Ohio to Yellowstone. Good truck. When your not towing, it gets you around with pretty decent MPGs. So we're happy we got it.

Whatever you hear about the fuel efficiency, take with a grain of salt. Much like a T-diesel, if you don't lead foot around town you get good mpgs, if your get-up-and_go kinda of driver you'll be spinning up those turbos at every light and drinking the gas.

What kinda realistic number are you seeing under tow? Can you get 9? And what would you expect a realistic number is running around town? Now I get 8-9 under tow and 11-13 around town with my 6.0 1500 HD (4:10 gears).

Mine is still pretty new, but I can tell you what I am getting so far. Initially, I was getting about 14 around town. I pulled my camper with the mileage about 1200. First couple of legs I was getting 10.6 according to the computer and verified to be pretty close when I filled up. Each leg was about 150 miles. I stayed in a campground about a week, and started getting over 22mpg with my running around. Once I started back with the camper, I got 11.1. From what I have heard, the mpg will improve a bit as the engine gets more miles on it. I was pretty pleased with 11.1 as that was better than I was getting with my previous TV. My camper is 4850 dry so not a heavyweight though. Truck pulled it fine. Difficult to keep it at a reasonable speed sometime. I try not to pull it over 60mph.

I was towing 10-11 out west. Seems like we had headwinds both ways. Otherwise I get low twenties, I drive the truck back and forth to work which is almost all interstate with traffic hot spots.

Took a couple road trips no trailer and setting the cruise with no wind and no traffic your in the solid 21-23. The ecoboost is kind to light-footed driving.

I upgraded to 10 ply tires and it dropped around 1mpg. Have not fiddled with the air pressure yet. The shop that installed no doubt didnt put in enough air.

You ask any ecoboost owner and you going to get mpg numbers all over the map.

I didnt buy it for the mpg as much as the torque. It is an amazing motor.

"keep it at reasonable speed" by that do you mean that the truck wants to keep pulling to a higher speed, or it is hard to maintain set speeds?

I truly appreciate your input....I too have a lightweight with the ST22BH. I think the dry ship weight was around 4200-4500 lbs.

I purposely downsized two years ago to a more manageable lighter weight rig so we can easily do long trips without white knuckles.

What I mean is that if I am not paying attention, I will be going faster than I intend to. I actually used the cruise control some on the first two legs, back roads, speed limit 55, and it maintained that with no problem. But if I am driving without cruise control, it is easy to lose track of the speed, just like not towing. I am quite pleased with the way the truck looks, handles, and tows. Plenty of interior room room too. I really liked my Tacoma, and it would pull my camper, but I felt like I needed something with a little more capability in case I ever wanted to get into mountainous terrain. The Taco wouldn't cut it for that.

You will get numbers all over the board for any mileage.
A lot will depend on the gearing in the Eco. I have the 373s. The height and weight of your rig. How fast you tow. What the wind is on any given day.

This winter, I have been from 15 to 18 mpg running around. In the summer,
18.5 to 22.5. Towing, a lot depends on wind and terrain. I seen one or two tanks last summer when we came back from CO. at 6.5 to 7. Horrible wind. Most of the time on that trip I ran from 9/9.5 to just over 11. The whole trip was around 9 or a hair over.
I'm pulling a 5er so I think the ones pulling a tt will/should do better because they aren't pushing as much wind.

The power is very good! I never had any problem maintaining what I set the cruise at, even in the mountains. I think our biggest grade was just over 9%, and I was doing 60 when we hit the peak.
So far I am totally satisfied with the Eco-Boost.

I got a solid 10 driving back roads to our Northeast Rally. Around town, and I live on top of a mountain, I only get about 14. Traveling the interstates around 20. Lot of grunt for a small engine, and when the 2nd turbo kicks it you feel it.

Just sold my propride hitch to some nice people that bought a new TT to tow behind his ecoboost....

It's his daily driver and loves it but says his real mpg is less than he thought...

BUT, when asked (since my wife's Explorer sport gets over 20 around dfw for that heavy thing) he admitted his drive to work is like 10 miles through stop and go traffic and he IS young so suspect it's not at a leisurely pace

F150 questions

Good evening all.
I need some help as I begin to think of narrowing down what I need.

Question 1: Do I have a choice of gearing in an ecoboost? If so, what would be your opinion for optimum performance with a light trailer (4500 lbs dry). Between towing and mileage when not.

Question 2: I have after market extending mirrors on my current Chevy and love then. Does ford have an option?

Question 3: This is one I admit is a pampered treat option. Does Ford offer push button start on the F150's ?My wifes new Toyota has it and I have to admit,,,,I kinda like it.

Question 4: What options did you get that you love, and which could you live without?

Thanks for all the help.

Don't know about the gearing....it may depend on the body style, bed length, etc.
Ford does have an option for mirror extension, but again, it may depend on the model...FX4, XL, Lariat, King, etc.
I dont' believe Ford trucks have the push button option. I know the either the Focus or Fusion do.
Love the heated mirrors, wife loves the heated seats. I like the sliding back window, wife likes the moon roof. I liked the shorter box, wife likes the 4 doors. I like the 4WD. Full gauges instead of idiot lites, if the model offers them. Can do without all the chrome options...just something else to keep clean. Get mud flaps and install yourself..cheaper. My f250 doesn't have anything I wouldn't order if I had the option.
Good hunting!

New truck time

Ford has a web page with a lot of good information on options for towing, capacity etc. I have a 2013 that I bought off the lot. It has a tow package but not the max tow. My trailer is about 4350 dry. Mine has 3:31 gears with electronic locking. I believe with the max tow package you can get towing mirrors. I use a clip on mirror that works just fine since mine didn't come with the factory tow mirrors. I have the 4 door crew max which my wife and I both like. The switch controlled sliding back window is nice. I wanted satellite radio with mine. On the one trip I have taken so far, I have had no issues pulling, and got 11.1 mpg pulling the camper on the last leg. I expect (hope) for that to improve as I get more miles, but I'm not complaining if it doesn't. Overall very pleased with the F150 Ecoboost.

The link for towing for 2013 models is http://www.ford.com/resources/ford/general/pdf/towingguides/14FLRV&TT_F150_Sep11.pdf

Thanks for all the help.

Question 1: You can get 3.15, 3.31, 3.55, 3.73 and 4.10s. What you need depends on cargo + passenger + trailer, so you need to do the research on your needs. I've 3.55s and my trailer dry is 6300 and tow without any concerns or issues.

Question 2: Yes. But I went with the slide on version for 40 bucks.

Question 3: Any aftermarket autostart system should take care of that need.

Question 4: Love the integrated brake controller and rear camera. I could live without the electric pedal adjuster. Seems a waste to me. Power rear window is nice. Auto-darkening rear view mirror is a huge upgrade from my previous 2004 vehicle. Saves my eyes at night.

My only real rant on my truck is the $1,500 chrome package that includes plastic-chrome clad wheels. These things look terrible after a couple Ohio winters.

The OEM bed extender I got after about a year. It is awesome. Easy to install aftermarket. No more cans of peas rolling around in the truck when I go shopping with the fam.

Also, I have a color matched hard Tonneau and spray in bedliner. Gotta have for us.

Off topic, but worth noting..
Your pricing will vary between 2014 and 2015 because of the "Reynolds Wrap" upgrade (Aluminum skin vs. Steel). As of last week, I did not see the final pricing for the 2015s yet.

My insurance guy told me rates will be much higher for the alum clad F150 because of the higher repair costs.

The 2015 F150 is more "aggressive" looking. Interior is getting alot of negative comments on the blogs, but basically is a shift towards what the Tundra interior looks like. Not my cup of tea.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. But the aluminum 15's are not due out until late this summer/early fall...Correct?

Correct. They will not be made with pure aluminum. It will be an aluminum alloy of the type they use in Government Humvee's. As far as insurance rates my insurer said the rates will not be that much higher since most panels are now replaced and not repaired.
