Serious Competition to Big 3
My local Nissan dealership got their first 2016 Titan with the new Cummins turbo diesel delivered to the lot yesterday. I had been on a waiting list to see this truck when it came out and I got a chance to see it and drive it first hand last night, and all I can say is WOW.
The model I test drove last night has 2,500 lb payload capacity and a 12,300 lb towing capacity, and it is designed and built with towing in mind. Super comfortable, well appointed interior for long hauls, integrated trailer sway control, and a very cool automatic trailer light check.
I had been looking at the F-150 Lariat with the 502A equipment package, Ecoboost, and Max Trailer Tow package that had an MSRP of $56,500, but this Titan had even more features and listed at $55,400 for a diesel.
I am really starting to 2nd guess the F-150 and I am leaning hard toward the Titan right now. Hopefully I can make a decision by the time I take my trailer out of storage this spring.

Shame they couldn't build in a bigger payload into the truck.

It is built by Cummins and I believe they have some diesel experience.

Cummins began design of this new, 5.0L, V-8 back in 2006 for Dodge. When the downturn hit in 2008 and Dodge was seeking bailout money and filing for bankruptcy Cummins put the design on the shelf.
Nissan had been working to develop a diesel engine for their commercial truck line and was having set back after set back. Cummins reached out to Nissan and the two companies entered into a partnership in 2011. Cummins brushed off the shelved plans and began refining them to meet Nissan's specs.
The unit I test drove was the quietest diesel I have ever driven. Absolutely no knock, and the power came in super smooth consistent.
The engine is being built at the original Cummins factory in Columbus, Indiana. It is being paired to an Aisin transmission also manufactured in Indiana, and final assembly is at Nissan's truck plant in Mississippi.

Sounds stout and promising !
I really miss the push of a turbo diesel pickups since the 1250 lbft cummins in the motorhome feels like a sewing machine pushing around 40k+ lbs !
and the Jeep DOES have a sewing machine in it

Sounds like the drive train is a Aisin transmission used by Dodge and the engine Cummins. Sounds like a good combo but would wait a year and see how things shake out. Just my two cents.

If I had 55 grand I wanted to spend on a truck, I'd take a chance. I know Ford tested the pee out of the EcoBoost but I just don't like running high RPM engines with red hot turbos.

If you're talking about high rpm's on the ecoboost that's just not true. I cruise when towing the rv at about 63 mph and around 2000 rpm.

X2,
Going on year 5 with my Ecoboost and same experience with the RPM's. I was really leary about buying new motor technology in year one, but I love this motor. Only complaint is it is sometimes too quiet and sounds like a sewing machine!

Regarding the muffler, I'm looking replacing it with a Magnaflow or Flowmaster. Needs to sound a little louder.

Well, maybe a sewing machine sound is better than the Blow drier on steroids that my newer ford 6.7 diesels sounded like with the SCR system on it !

Same as Mark...70 mph at less than 2K RPM...yes, I know that is too fast...I do kind of like the sound of the turbos winding up a bit...would be interested to hear what the new exhaust does for the sound and performance, but can't think of anything I would change about the truck right now...

I'm not taking sides here, but comparing a gasoline motor to a diesel engine is apples and oranges.
There are distinct advantages to either one. It's up to the end-user to decide what will best for his or her's particular situation and long-term needs. I'm more than confident in the 5.0 Cummins platform. What would concern me, however, is the build quality, suspension and reliability of a Nissan. Just because it can tow 12,500 lbs does not mean it should. Certain vehicles will tow like a brick while others are a dream to pull with. It's not the motor's fault in most cases. The chassis, suspension and overall design or setup play a big part in the equation.
