Tow ST270 with Tundra

Hi,
I'm new to RV's and towing. I'm very seriously considering purchasing an ST270BH to tow with a Tundra, 5.7l, crewmax, 4x4.

I'd use a WD hitch of course (any opinions on a good one?). Some are saying the equilizer. The dealer I may buy the 270 from is trying to sell me an Anderson hitch, which is supposed to be a self-adjusting WD hitch.
I'm pretty clueless right now when it comes to hitches.

Any opinions about the ability/ease for my Tundra to pull the 270 (Hitch Wt: 614, Dry Wt: 5366). Based on Tundra specs it seems no problem, but I want to make sure I'm not 'biting off more RV then I can handle!'
Thanks everyone!

Mike

As long as you have the tow package you will be fine. Remember dry weight is not going to be your actual weight. I tow a ST29SS which is about 1500# heavier with by Tundra no problem. Personal opinion on the hitch considering cost would be the Reese Dual Cam or the Equal-i-zer. I have the Reese and am very happy with it. The Anderson is a newer design that I believe is a better choice for lighter trailers. Lots of threads on the internet about it.

You will be fine. I pull my ST32BH which has a dry weight of 7200 just fine. My tundra can tow 10000. My trailer loaded with gear and water is about 8600. So the hitch about 860lbs which it handles just fine. I also have the crewmax so after family I can carrier additional 300lbs with the cargo weight. That is will a full tank of fresh water too, which I never have. I hope that helps.

Hey Dustin,
Yes, that helps, thanks! I've been reading too many horror stories about people who 'over-tow'. So, I tried to pick a trailer that my Tundra would have no problem with. This one sounds perfect.

Check your door sticker on the Tundra to see what the payload rating of YOUR truck is. The listed tongue wt of the ST270 is a fairy tale and will be considerably higher once battery(s), propane and a load are added to the trailer. Still, it looks like the Tundra would be a good match as long as the numbers work.

When I purchased our sunset crossroads said that the dry weight is with the battery and pull propane tanks. Is this not true? I also did the tongue weight based on the true weight of the camper about 10%.

The weight sticker iside the cabinet door of my unit says "Weight of this unit does not include LP, water or dealer installed options" In my case there was a dealer option for a battery upgrade (which I didn't take) and I was told they put whichever battery option on when the TT gets to the lot. Maybe things have changed?

Towed my ST30BH for 6 seasons with the same 5.7l Tundra and Equal-I-Zer hitch. No problems especially here in the Colorado mountains. You'll be fine. I moved on to the RAM 2500 CTD anticipating a 5th wheel in the near future.

No problem! You will be fine just do it and go have fun! Just don't load the truck bed to the gills with gear, put it in the trailer as payload will be your only concern.

Yours is a bit heavier than ours...and the Tundra does well? How is solo MPG?

I am a chevy guy...but I have been looking at some of the newer 1/2-tons versus just going 3/4-ton. Any input on real-world experience with your Tundra would be helpful!

We towed to FL this past thanksgiving and at 65mph I was getting around 9 to 11 mpg depending on wind. At 70mph I was getting 7 to 9mpg.

In real world solo city driving 14mpg is about all I get. Getting it rolling up to speed is killer. Solo on the highway below 70 18mpg is doable. Above 70 and it gets ugly again.lol Towing I average 9-10. Love the truck though

I just got the truck, the gas needle does move pretty quickly. But I'm not complaining. Love the truck.

They make an extra add on gas tank for about $2600. On the tundra form people love it. I'm thinking about it.

At $3.50 a gallon for gas that's around 742 gallons of gas. I'd rather have the gas.

I know, but not pulling over as often would be nice. With the 26 gallon tank I was stopping around every 190ish miles to fill up. I rather go the extra distance.

Yeah, it's easy for me to say. My F150 has a 36 gallon tank and it is nice not to have to stop as often.

Eddy, I heard that the new Chevy 1/2 tons have six speeds in them and this has improved their towing? I would have to seriously consider another one before jumping into a bigger truck or going diesel. If I was in a position where I was full timeing maybe a different story.

I have owned a 2007 and a 2012 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 4x4 5.7v8 SR5 with the TRD Package. My only complaint was not enough payload capacity. My 2012 with a full tank of gas had only 1280 lbs payload capacity. Yes my truck would tow up to 9600 lbs. After 2 years of towing my rv that weighed 7,000 lbs empty and loading up the rv plus my 2- 30lb propane tanks full and my battery and what I put in the bed I decided to go with a new 2013 GMC 2500 extended cab 4x4 6.0 v8

We are buying the 290RL...

Seriously thinking of going with the Tundra double cab 5.7 4x4 SR5. May have to drive to Asheville, NC to get one that is more in our price range. But that isn't that far of a drive for us.
