My wife and I have been investigating various 5th wheel manufacturers. I own a 2005 Chev HD 2500 with the 6.6 Liter Deisel and the Allison transmission. My owner's manual indicates that this truck has a towing capacity of 12,000 lbs.
When I visit with various dealers - most of them insist that my truck can tow more than that. HELP ME PLEASE.

depending on cab & bed configuration, you should be between 14,500 and 15,800 #. As cowboy 71 has said, all the info is on the website.

Yeah, I know, who does it, but if you look in your owners manual, you will find all the information that you'll need regarding the capability of your truck. It has a section that lists all the weight limits for every configuration of the Silverado.
Off hand, I'd say that you will be ok with any Crossroads 5vr with GVWR of 12000lb or less.

A salesman is going to tell you whatever he thinks you want to hear to sell you his trailer. Stay within the limits of your truck and buy what makes you happy.

I am new to this as well, as I just bought an 08 F250 Diesel. I thought the weight ratings were different for "tow ratings" involving a bumper pull, as opposed to a gooseneck or fifth wheel.
Mine shows a rating of 12,500 as that is what my hitch is rated, however a rating of 16,000 for a fifth wheel or gooseneck (not sure if there is a difference).
This GVWR GCWR, GWR, etc, etc is confusing !

This Towing Guide from trailerlife.com has an article that will answer all of your questions about weight ratings and towing capacity. This one list the tow rating for 2010 vehicles, but they have older editions available online specific to your vehicle year.
Happy reading

While my wife and I were at an RV show several years ago we were simply looking at some literature abouta 5th wheeler (not Crossroads). A sales agent "nabbed me" before I could walk away and asked what truck I was driving. After I told him he said he'd never recommend pulling a tailer that heavy with that model.
There was another guy standing nearby who chimed saying that he was a farmer, and that he pulled 16,000 lbs with his truck all the time, and never had a problem. I told him he was braver than I, and left him to the sales agent. I'd go with trailer life, your manual, and most of the other folks on this site.

OK - I looked on Trailerlifetowing.com - it indicates that my towing capacity is 12,000 lbs /(16,000 lbs) - (fifth wheel). So..now my "fears" of being over-capacity have left. Now we want your help/advice on a couple of models - namely the Kingston KF35SB and the KF36CK and the Seville VF35CK.

I know it's a matter of "personal choice"------ Having said that, I would caution you to go slow and maybe second think the size of trailer you are going to end up with. We had a "BIG" HH. Sure it was nice, lots of room, etc, etc. Now we have a 26RK. It has all the features we need and most all of what the bigger units have. Plus, we can now get into State and National parks that were impossible to get to with the HH. It also takes less fuel to pull it.
But, there again whats important to one person might not be to the next person.
